Expand the words before interpreting the message
In a message such as Bitte etwas zum Schreiben mitbringen, z. B. einen Bleistift, the pencil is an example of something to write with. It is not the only permitted object. In Beginn ca. 18 Uhr, the time is approximate. These small forms change how precisely you should read the surrounding information.
Read the notice, then expand the short form
Fictional notice 1
Bitte etwas zum Schreiben mitbringen, z. B. einen Bleistift.
z. B.zum Beispiel
- Full expression
- Bitte etwas zum Schreiben mitbringen, zum Beispiel einen Bleistift.
- Reading check
- A pencil is one example of something to write with; it is not the only possible item.
Fictional notice 2
Beginn ca. 18 Uhr.
ca.circa
- Full expression
- Beginn circa 18 Uhr.
- Reading check
- The start is approximately 18:00. The short form does not promise an exact time.
Fictional notice 3
Ggf. einen zweiten Termin vereinbaren.
ggf.gegebenenfalls
- Full expression
- Gegebenenfalls einen zweiten Termin vereinbaren.
- Reading check
- A second appointment is conditional. Ask when this applies if the surrounding message does not explain it.
Original language examples. These cards do not reproduce an institutional notice.
Use a three-step check: identify the full expression, read the surrounding sentence, and say what the expression contributes. Does it introduce an example, explain a previous phrase, add a condition, or point to another place in the text? If the sentence still allows two interpretations, ask a question rather than choose from the letters alone.
Twelve useful German abbreviations
| Short form | Full expression | Reading function |
|---|---|---|
| z. B. | zum Beispiel | Introduces an example: ein Sport, z. B. Schwimmen. |
| d. h. | das heißt | Explains or makes something more precise: nur vormittags, d. h. vor zwölf Uhr. |
| usw. | und so weiter | Continues a recognizable list: Stifte, Papier, Umschläge usw. |
| bzw. | beziehungsweise | Connects alternatives, matching items or a more precise formulation; context decides. |
| ca. | circa / zirka | An approximate amount or time: ca. zehn Minuten. |
| ggf. | gegebenenfalls | Applies if the relevant situation arises: ggf. nachfragen. |
| evtl. | eventuell | A possibility: evtl. komme ich später. |
| u. a. | unter anderem / unter anderen; und andere | A selection from a larger set; the sentence determines the expansion. |
| inkl. | inklusive | Something is included: inkl. Material. |
| zzgl. | zuzüglich | Something is added: zzgl. Versand. |
| Nr. | Nummer | Identifies an item: Aufgabe Nr. 4. |
| vgl. | vergleiche | Points to material to compare: vgl. Abschnitt 2. |
The table gives useful reading jobs, not automatic word-for-word English substitutions. For example, German eventuell means “possibly”; it does not mean English “eventually”. Technical, medical and legal shorthand needs its own context.
Read two short notices carefully
Fictional course notice: Der Workshop dauert ca. zwei Stunden. Bitte Schreibmaterial mitbringen, z. B. einen Bleistift. Kursgebühr: zwölf Euro inkl. Material.
You know the duration approximately, you have an example of a useful item, and the material is included. The wording does not tell you the exact finishing minute or identify every material supplied. A useful question is Welches Material ist enthalten?
Fictional delivery note: Das Paket kostet zwölf Euro zzgl. Versand. Ggf. einen anderen Liefertermin vereinbaren. Shipping is an addition to the stated amount. The second sentence applies if another delivery date is needed. It does not say that everyone must change their date. The abbreviation alone does not establish the terms of a real purchase.
Keep possibility, condition and explanation separate
Evtl. findet das Treffen im Garten statt presents the garden as a possible location. Ggf. einen Raum reservieren asks for a reservation if the relevant need arises. The words overlap in some settings, but replacing them mechanically can hide the condition.
Wir treffen uns digital, d. h. per Video explains what “digital” means here. With z. B., video would be one example among possible digital formats. Check whether the writer is defining this arrangement or merely offering an example.
Bzw. deserves a separate pause. In Die Gruppen A und B beginnen um neun bzw. zehn Uhr, the order pairs A with nine and B with ten. Keep this one reading pattern in mind, but do not translate every bzw. as “respectively”. If a message is unclear, ask Welche Uhrzeit gilt für meine Gruppe?
Write clearly and read the full expression
Ordinary written forms such as z. B. are usually read as their full words. Multi-part forms keep their internal spaces. At the end of a statement, the abbreviation’s final dot also closes the sentence. These conventions are documented in Duden’s abbreviation rules.
For your own message, spelling out an expression can make reading easier: gegebenenfalls, zum Beispiel, inklusive Material. Use short forms when they help the reader. For a full message-writing task, continue with German email practice. For the vocabulary around dates and forms, see forms, dates, money and numbers.
Eight decoding tasks with reasons
Expand the abbreviation and explain its effect before opening each answer. Several tasks ask for a reading decision, not just a memorized full form.
1. A notice says “Getränke, z. B. Wasser”. Must the drink be water?
Answer and reason: No. Zum Beispiel gives water as an example. Other drinks may fit; the notice does not list all of them.
2. Read “Der Weg dauert ca. zehn Minuten”. Is ten minutes an exact promise?
Answer and reason: No. Circa marks an approximation. Keep that uncertainty when you explain the sentence.
3. Expand “Papier, Stifte usw.” aloud.
Answer and reason: Papier, Stifte und so weiter. The phrase leaves the recognizable list open; do not read the three letters separately here.
4. A description says “inkl. Umschlag”. Is the envelope an additional item to pay for?
Answer and reason: The wording says inklusive Umschlag: an envelope is included. It does not state any other price conditions.
5. What changes if “inkl. Versand” becomes “zzgl. Versand”?
Answer and reason: Shipping changes from included to added: zuzüglich Versand. The short form is small, but the reading consequence matters.
6. “Ggf. einen neuen Termin vereinbaren.” Does everyone need a new appointment?
Answer and reason: No. Gegebenenfalls makes it conditional. Ask what situation triggers the change if the message does not explain it.
7. Pair the times: “Gruppe A und Gruppe B: neun bzw. zehn Uhr.”
Answer and reason: A: nine; B: ten. The two items are paired in order in this example. This does not give bzw. one universal translation.
8. Explain “Wir üben u. a. Lesen und Schreiben” without listing every course activity.
Answer and reason: Wir üben unter anderem Lesen und Schreiben. Those are included examples from a larger set; the sentence does not claim that they are the only activities.
Finish by rewriting one notice with every short form expanded. Then cover the expansion and read the original naturally. If you can explain the condition, example or addition in your own words, you have understood more than the letters.
Questions about this topic
What do z. B. and d. h. mean?
Z. B. is zum Beispiel, which introduces an example. D. h. is das heißt, which explains or specifies the preceding wording. The surrounding sentence decides the exact interpretation.
Should I pronounce German written abbreviations as letters?
For the ordinary written forms in this guide, usually say the full expression: z. B. becomes zum Beispiel. Initial words and other types can behave differently.
Does ggf. mean the same as evtl.?
Ggf. expands to gegebenenfalls and points to a relevant case or condition. Evtl. expands to eventuell and signals a possibility. Context can bring their uses close together.
What should I do with an unfamiliar abbreviation?
Read the complete sentence, identify the text type, and check a reliable dictionary or the writer’s own explanation. Ask for clarification if the meaning affects a decision.
