A picture map for familiar animal groups
Start with a setting you can picture. Think of animals someone keeps at home, animals in a farm scene, and familiar wild animals. Das Tier means “animal”, with plural die Tiere. Das Haustier means “pet”, with plural die Haustiere. These are useful category words when you do not yet know a specific animal name.
Animals you can recognize
At home
- der Hund
- die Katze
- das Kaninchen
- der Hamster
- der Vogel
- der Fisch
On a farm
- die Kuh
- das Schwein
- das Pferd
- das Schaf
- das Huhn
- die Ente
In the wild
- der Fuchs
- das Reh
- der Igel
- das Eichhörnchen
Use the map in two directions. First find a German name for an animal you recognize. Later, read a German name and imagine the animal without translating the whole list. The illustration is deliberately simple; the table below supplies the precise word forms that the drawings cannot show.
Animal names with their articles and plurals
| Singular with article | Plural | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| der Hund | die Hunde | dog |
| die Katze | die Katzen | cat |
| das Kaninchen | die Kaninchen | rabbit |
| der Hamster | die Hamster | hamster |
| der Vogel | die Vögel | bird |
| der Fisch | die Fische | fish |
| die Kuh | die Kühe | cow |
| das Schwein | die Schweine | pig |
| das Pferd | die Pferde | horse |
| das Schaf | die Schafe | sheep |
| das Huhn | die Hühner | chicken |
| die Ente | die Enten | duck |
| der Fuchs | die Füchse | fox |
| das Reh | die Rehe | roe deer |
| der Igel | die Igel | hedgehog |
| das Eichhörnchen | die Eichhörnchen | squirrel |
Das Kaninchen is the useful standard word for a rabbit, including a pet rabbit. Do not automatically replace it with der Hase, which is the standard name for a hare. Everyday informal usage can vary, but learning the two names separately keeps a picture description clear. Das Reh is specifically a roe deer rather than a translation for every animal called “deer” in English.
A short reference is more useful if the entries become active vocabulary. Choose four animals that matter to you and write a personal example. You do not need rare species or a large list of animal idioms to begin talking about a pet or a picture.
Watch endings, umlauts and unchanged plurals
Some pairs add -e: Hund – Hunde, Pferd – Pferde. Others also change a vowel: Kuh – Kühe, Fuchs – Füchse, Vogel – Vögel. Huhn – Hühner has both an umlaut and the ending -er. Learn the complete pair; one spelling trick will not predict every animal plural.
In das Kaninchen – die Kaninchen, der Hamster – die Hamster and der Igel – die Igel, the written noun stays the same. The article, number or verb tells you more: Das Kaninchen ist klein. Die Kaninchen sind klein. Use the German noun-plural guide for broader patterns rather than extending this animal reference into a full grammar table.
Grammatical gender does not always tell you an animal’s sex
The article belongs to the German noun. Der Hund can name a dog without specifying whether it is male or female. If that distinction matters, die Hündin explicitly means a female dog and der Rüde a male dog. In a context contrasting the sexes, Hund itself can also mean a male dog. Read the context rather than treating one dictionary gender as a biological claim.
Similarly, die Katze is the ordinary general word for a cat, while der Kater specifies a male cat. Das Tier and das Kaninchen remain grammatically neuter even when you know the animal’s sex. For this lesson, first keep the noun and its article together; add a more specific label only when the conversation needs it.
Build a short description of a pet
Use three pieces of information: the animal, a name if relevant, and one recognizable detail. An original example is Ich habe ein Kaninchen. Es heißt Momo. Es ist klein und grau. Another is Wir haben zwei Katzen. Sie heißen Nila und Taro. Beide sind schwarz. The singular and plural versions help you notice es ist versus sie sind.
After haben, compare einen Hund, eine Katze and ein Kaninchen. These are accusative noun phrases. If you only want to name an animal in a picture, use Das ist ein Hund instead. Then add a simple sentence such as Der Hund schläft. The adjective-endings guide helps when you move from Die Katze ist klein to a phrase such as eine kleine Katze.
Eight animal checks with explanations
Say or write your answer before opening the explanation. Keep the article when a task asks for the singular.
Name a pet rabbit with its article.
Check answer and explanation
das Kaninchen
Kaninchen is the standard rabbit word. Hase names a hare and is not an interchangeable label in a precise picture reference.
Write the plural of der Hund with its article.
Check answer and explanation
die Hunde
The noun adds -e. Die here is the plural article, not a change to the singular noun’s gender.
Complete the pair: die Kuh – ___.
Check answer and explanation
die Kühe
The plural changes u to ü and adds -e. Keep both parts of that change.
Two chickens appear in a farm picture. Name them.
Check answer and explanation
zwei Hühner
Huhn becomes Hühner, with an umlaut and -er. Huhne is not the plural in this reference.
One rabbit becomes two: ein Kaninchen – ___.
Check answer and explanation
zwei Kaninchen
The written noun does not change. Zwei makes the quantity explicit.
Does der Hund necessarily mean a male dog?
Check answer and explanation
Nein. Ein Hund kann männlich oder weiblich sein.
The general animal name does not require the sex to be stated. Rüde and Hündin are useful when a distinction matters.
Complete with the accusative phrase: Ich habe ___ (a dog).
Check answer and explanation
Ich habe einen Hund.
Haben takes an accusative object. Masculine ein becomes einen in this phrase.
Describe two gray cats in one sentence.
Check answer and explanation
Zwei Katzen sind grau.
Zwei states the quantity; use the plural noun and sind. The color after sein has no adjective ending. Another clear sentence with the same meaning can also work.
Retrieve the words in a new order
Draw three simple boxes headed Haustiere, Bauernhof and Wildtiere. Put two animal names in each, then cover the reference and add their articles and plurals. Moving a bird or fish to a different sensible setting is not a vocabulary error; explain the setting you have in mind.
For a final speaking task, describe an invented pet in three sentences without looking at the model. Change the animal and at least two details. If you miss a plural, return only to that pair and try again later. This makes the next review a retrieval task rather than another reading of a long list.
Questions about this topic
How do you say pet in German?
A pet is das Haustier; the plural is die Haustiere. Das Tier is the broader word for an animal.
What is the plural of Kaninchen?
The plural is die Kaninchen. The written noun is unchanged: ein Kaninchen, zwei Kaninchen.
Are Hase and Kaninchen the same word?
No. In a standard precise reference, Kaninchen means rabbit and Hase means hare. Informal names can vary, but learning them separately avoids a misleading identification.
Does der or die tell me whether an animal is male or female?
Not necessarily. The article marks the noun’s grammatical gender. A general word such as Hund can refer to an animal whose sex has not been specified; more specific words such as Rüde and Hündin state the distinction.
