Clothes in German: garments, sizes and trying things on

Learn each garment with its article and plural: die Jacke, die Jacken. Then add the size and a concrete fit problem. This reference groups clothes by use and helps you ask for a different item without memorising a long shop dialogue.

Clothes with articles and plurals

The German word for clothing as a general category is die Kleidung. To count individual items, use das Kleidungsstück, die Kleidungsstücke. The table gives one useful everyday form per item. A shirt, coat and scarf do not all form their plurals in the same way, so keep the complete pair together.

Die Hose can name one pair of trousers. You do not have to copy the English plural “trousers” into German. For shoes, distinguish ein Schuh from ein Paar Schuhe: the second phrase normally describes two matching shoes. The table uses Schals; Schale is also a dictionary-listed plural of Schal.

Look at the shape before reading the word: jacket and coat, skirt and dress, shoe and boot. The reference below the picture gives the checked singular and plural forms.

This is a memory grouping, not a dress code. Choose clothes that suit the person and situation. For a fictional overnight bag, select one main item, one extra layer and two small items. Name each one aloud with its article, then say which item you deliberately left out. That last choice checks whether you understand the vocabulary rather than merely reciting the table.

Name the size and the fit separately

Die Größe means the size; its plural is die Größen. A usable request is Haben Sie die Jacke in Größe M? If a shop uses numbers, you can ask Haben Sie die Hose in Größe 40? Labels vary between brands and systems; these practice phrases do not convert measurements or guarantee that a label will fit.

Describe what you notice: Die Jacke ist zu klein means the jacket is too small. Zu groß, zu eng, zu weit, zu lang and zu kurz express too big, tight, loose, long and short. Die Ärmel sind zu kurz is more specific than simply saying an item is bad. Die Jacke passt gut gives a positive fit assessment. Your preference is another question: Die Farbe gefällt mir nicht can be true even when the item fits.

Ask for another colour or a chance to try it on

Keep the item visible in your sentence: Haben Sie diesen Pullover auch in Blau? asks for this sweater in blue. A simpler alternative, while pointing clearly, is Haben Sie das auch in Blau? To ask permission, say Kann ich die Jacke anprobieren? The changing room is die Umkleidekabine; Wo ist die Umkleidekabine? asks where it is.

For a first description, separate the facts: Der Mantel ist schwarz. Er ist zu lang. Before a noun the adjective can take an ending, as in ein schwarzer Mantel. Work through the adjective-endings guide for the wider pattern. For the meanings of getting dressed and changing clothes, continue with the existing movement and clothing verb comparisons; a garment list alone cannot explain those contrasts.

Read a short trying-on exchange and track the change

In this original practice situation, Alex wants a jacket. The first jacket is blue and labelled M. Its sleeves are too short. Another jacket of the same model is available in L, but only in green. Alex wants to try it before deciding.

Alex: Die Ärmel sind zu kurz. Haben Sie die Jacke in Größe L?

Mitarbeiterin: Ja, aber nur in Grün.

Alex: Gut. Kann ich die grüne Jacke anprobieren?

Three facts matter: the garment stays a jacket, the requested size changes from M to L, and the colour changes from blue to green. The exchange does not say that Alex buys anything. Retell just those facts in two short sentences. If a word is missing, point to the garment and ask one concrete question instead of inventing an answer.

Eight garment and fit checks

  1. Which table word names one coat, and what is its plural?

    Show answer and reason

der Mantel – die Mäntel. The plural changes a to ä; adding an s would not give this reference form.

  2. You need two matching shoes. Choose ein Schuh or ein Paar Schuhe.

    Show answer and reason

ein Paar Schuhe. One Schuh is one shoe; a pair contains two matching shoes.

  3. Can die Hose describe one pair of trousers?

    Show answer and reason

Yes. Ich brauche eine Hose can refer to one garment. The noun need not be plural just because the English translation is plural.

  4. The sleeves end above your wrists. Complete: Die Ärmel sind zu …

    Show answer and reason

kurz. The problem is length, not necessarily the width or the colour of the jacket.

  5. Ask for this sweater in blue using Pullover.

    Show answer and reason

Haben Sie diesen Pullover auch in Blau? This preserves the garment and requests a different colour.

  6. In Alex’s exchange, which size is requested next?

    Show answer and reason

Größe L. The first jacket was M; Alex asks for L because its sleeves were too short.

  7. Does Alex’s exchange prove that the green jacket fits?

    Show answer and reason

No. Alex asks to try it on. Neither the fit of the second jacket nor a purchase is confirmed.

  8. Say that a jacket fits but you dislike its colour.

    Show answer and reason

Die Jacke passt gut, aber die Farbe gefällt mir nicht. Fit and preference are different pieces of information.

Practise one useful change at a time

Write a three-item packing list from the map without looking at the table. Check the articles and plurals afterwards. Then choose one item and change only its size, colour or fit problem. For example, keep Jacke and replace zu klein with zu weit. Keeping the item constant makes the difference easier to notice.

Finish with one clear request and a possible refusal: Haben Sie das in Größe S? – Nein, leider nicht. You can end with Danke, dann nehme ich es nicht. You do not need to buy an item to finish the practice. For more everyday distinctions around choosing, fitting and arranging something, use the daily-life word comparisons.

Questions about this topic

Is Kleidung singular or plural?

Die Kleidung is a singular collective noun for clothing. To count separate items, use ein Kleidungsstück or mehrere Kleidungsstücke.

How do I ask for a different size in German?

Say Haben Sie die Jacke in Größe L? Replace Jacke and L with the item and label you need. Size labels differ between brands, so the phrase is not a measurement conversion.

What is the difference between zu eng and zu kurz?

Zu eng means too tight; zu kurz means too short. An item can have either problem or both. Naming the part, such as Die Ärmel sind zu kurz, makes the problem clearer.

Is the plural of Schal Schals?

Die Schals is a correct plural and the form used in this guide. Duden also lists die Schale. Learn one consistent form first without treating the other as an error.
