| Word | Core meaning | Typical context | Grammar |
|---|---|---|---|
| vor | before; ago; in front of | noun phrases about time or position | Temporal dative; spatial dative or accusative |
| bevor | before an event happens | a clause describing the later event | Subordinate conjunction; finite verb last |
vor
Meaning and usage: Use temporal vor with a named event or time. With an amount of elapsed time measured backward from now, it commonly means ago. Spatial vor identifies a position in front of something or a direction to that position; it is therefore not always a time word.
Grammar: Temporal vor takes dative: vor dem Unterricht, vor einer Stunde. Spatial location takes dative, while direction to a new position takes accusative: vor dem Haus versus vor das Haus. It does not introduce a subject-plus-finite-verb clause by itself.
Vor dem Unterricht trinke ich einen Kaffee.
Before class I drink a coffee.
Sie ist vor einer Stunde angekommen.
She arrived an hour ago.
Das Fahrrad steht vor dem Haus.
The bicycle is in front of the house.
bevor
Meaning and usage: Use bevor when you describe the event that happens later than the main-clause action. It can make a before relationship explicit without turning the event into a noun phrase. The two actions do not have to be separated by a long time.
Grammar: Bevor introduces a subordinate clause, separated by a comma. The finite verb normally comes last. If the bevor clause comes first, the main clause begins with its finite verb after the comma.
Ich prüfe die Adresse, bevor ich die Nachricht schicke.
I check the address before I send the message.
Bevor wir losfahren, schließen wir die Fenster.
Before we leave, we close the windows.
Overlap and context
Vor der Abfahrt and bevor wir abfahren can refer to the same time relationship, but they use different grammatical structures. Vor can also mean ago in a time-distance phrase, while bevor cannot replace it there. The word's English translation is therefore not enough; look at what follows it.
Common mistakes
- For time, use dative: vor dem Essen, not vor das Essen.
- Do not write bevor der Besprechung when you mean a noun phrase.
- In a bevor clause, put the finite verb last: bevor wir gehen.
Memory aid: Vor goes with the event name; bevor goes with what happens.

Fill both gaps: ___ dem Essen wasche ich die Hände. ___ ich esse, wasche ich die Hände.
Show the answer
Vor; Bevor
Dem Essen is a dative noun phrase. Ich esse is a clause, so it needs bevor.
