Meaning, sentence patterns and examples
| Word | Core meaning | Typical context | Grammar |
|---|---|---|---|
| nach | after; toward; according to | a noun phrase; time or direction | preposition + dative |
| nachdem | after | a clause describing an earlier event | subordinate clause; finite verb at end |
nach
Meaning and usage: In its temporal use, nach means after a time, activity or event named by a noun. It also has other senses, including movement toward some destinations and according to. Those senses explain why nach Berlin and nach dem Unterricht are both possible but not equivalent in meaning.
Grammar: Preposition with dative: nach dem Essen, nach der Arbeit, nach den Ferien. It does not itself create a subordinate clause. Nach dem contains two words because dem is the noun’s definite article.
Nach dem Unterricht gehen wir zusammen ins Café.
After the lesson, we go to the café together.
nachdem
Meaning and usage: Nachdem supplies a complete earlier event, rather than merely the name of an activity. It is useful when who did what matters: after I read the email, after she arrived, after the test finished. The temporal relation is the important point, not a blanket rule that every nachdem sentence must use one tense.
Grammar: Subordinating conjunction. Put the finite verb at the end of its clause and separate it with a comma. A common past narrative uses past perfect in the nachdem-clause and simple past in the main clause. Present/future contexts can use perfect plus present.
Nachdem ich die E-Mail gelesen hatte, rief ich die Schule an.
After I had read the email, I called the school.
Overlap and context
Nach dem Essen and nachdem wir gegessen haben can refer to the same point in a sequence. The clause gives more information about the participants and action. If it comes first, the whole subordinate clause occupies the initial position: Nachdem wir gegessen haben, gehen wir los. The main-clause verb follows the comma. Nachdem has a regional causal use too, but the temporal construction is the useful general learner model here. It is different from seitdem, which can relate a starting point to an ongoing situation.
Common mistakes
- Avoid Nach ich gegessen habe …. A clause requires nachdem in this comparison.
- Avoid Nachdem dem Kurs …. A noun phrase uses nach dem Kurs.
- Do not insist that nachdem always requires past perfect regardless of the sentence’s time frame.
Memory aid: Nach + noun. Nachdem + subject and verb. Look past the letters to see the phrase’s structure.
