Meaning, sentence patterns and examples
| Word | Core meaning | Typical context | Grammar |
|---|---|---|---|
| später | later | comparison of times or an unspecified later point | adverb; also comparative of spät |
| nachher | afterwards; later | after an event or in the nearer future | temporal adverb; no noun complement |
später
Meaning and usage: Use später for a time after the current or already mentioned reference point. It can refer to the same afternoon or to a much later stage of life. Duration phrases such as fünf Minuten später make the interval explicit. Später also belongs to the comparison of spät: later than someone else or later than planned.
Grammar: As a temporal adverb, später is uninflected: Später komme ich zurück. In a comparison use als: später als geplant. The adjective form can take an ending before a noun, as in zu einem späteren Zeitpunkt. Do not add an adjective ending to the stand-alone temporal adverb.
Zwei Jahre später zog sie nach München.
Two years later, she moved to Munich.
Ich bin später angekommen als du.
I arrived later than you did.
nachher
Meaning and usage: Use nachher for what happens after a contextually understood event or for an unspecified later point nearby in time. It often suits everyday arrangements: finishing a task now and helping afterwards. It can describe a past sequence too, so it does not always mean later today or exclusively refer to the future. Regional speech also has a possible-event sense resembling otherwise or in the end.
Grammar: Nachher is an adverb and does not directly take a noun naming the event. Say nach dem Essen for after the meal, or finish describing the meal and then use nachher. As the first constituent of a statement it is followed by the finite verb: Nachher räumen wir auf.
Wir haben zusammen gegessen und nachher noch einen Spaziergang gemacht.
We ate together and went for a walk afterwards.
Ich beende erst diese Aufgabe; nachher helfe ich dir.
I will finish this task first; afterwards I will help you.
Overlap and context
Später and nachher overlap in an ordinary promise to call later. Nachher may make a nearby sequence more salient, but neither word sets a fixed number of minutes or guarantees the same calendar day in every context. In a narrative, nachher can refer back to an earlier event, while später allows a stated interval. For plans that require precision, add a time rather than expecting the adverb to supply one.
Common mistakes
- Do not translate after dinner as nachher dem Essen; use nach dem Essen.
- Do not teach that nachher is always future-oriented; it can describe afterwards in a past narrative.
- Use zwei Stunden später for two hours later; do not mechanically substitute nachher.
- Keep the verb second after either temporal adverb: Später/Nachher rufe ich an.
Memory aid: Später places an event later on the timeline. Nachher often points to what comes afterwards in the understood sequence. Add an exact interval or clock time when timing matters.

später
Später readily follows an explicit time interval. Nachher can mean afterwards, but drei Monate später is the intended standard construction.
