früher

Meaning and usage: For former habits, früher contrasts the past with now. It can also be the comparative of früh, meaning earlier than another time. This second use can concern tomorrow, so the rule “früher is always about the past” is wrong. A stated comparison or the context tells you which meaning applies.

Grammar: The adverb früher is uninflected. Comparative früher can modify an action; before a noun, adjective endings are required: ein früherer Zug, einen früheren Zug. Former/formerly uses have related forms such as meine frühere Wohnung.

Früher bin ich jeden Tag mit dem Bus zur Arbeit gefahren.

I used to take the bus to work every day.

Können wir morgen eine Stunde früher anfangen?

Can we start an hour earlier tomorrow?

vorher

Meaning and usage: Vorher needs a reference point supplied by the conversation or the sentence. If a meeting is at ten, vorher can describe a task completed before that meeting. Unlike vor, vorher does not take a following noun object. It can therefore stand alone when the event is already understood.

Grammar: Adverb; no inflection and no governed noun case. A fronted adverb is followed by the finite verb: Vorher rufe ich an. For a named noun event, use a suitable construction such as vor dem Termin, where vor governs dative in this time expression.

Der Film beginnt um acht. Vorher kaufen wir die Karten.

The film starts at eight. Before that, we will buy the tickets.

Ich komme gern mit. Sag mir aber bitte vorher Bescheid.

I would be happy to come along. Please let me know beforehand, though.

Overlap and context

Both can describe something earlier than another event: “Ich war schon früher dort” and “Ich war schon vorher dort” may overlap if the context establishes a prior visit. Früher often emphasizes an earlier time or a former situation; vorher organizes events relative to a reference point. Read the surrounding sentence before choosing.

Common mistakes

  • Do not replace every English “before” with vorher followed directly by a noun: use vor dem Kurs rather than vorher dem Kurs.
  • Do not assume früher excludes future plans; morgen früher anfangen compares times tomorrow.
  • Keep adjective endings in ein früherer Termin. The uninflected adverb form does not work before that noun.

Memory aid: Früher looks at an earlier time; vorher looks at the step before the event you have in mind.

Try it

Choose the more natural word: “___ habe ich in Hamburg gewohnt; heute wohne ich in Bonn.”

Früher

The sentence contrasts a former situation with the present, without setting a particular event as the “before that” reference.
