sozial
Meaning and usage: Sozial is broad: it can describe people’s relations, social structures and support for the community or vulnerable people. Eine soziale Person may suggest considerate or socially responsible behavior rather than simply enjoying parties. Its societal uses overlap with gesellschaftlich. A phrase such as soziale Medien is an established combination and should be learned without trying to reduce every use to kindness.
Grammar: Adjective: soziale Fragen, ein sozialer Beruf. After sein: das Verhalten ist sozial. Also used adverbially without an ending.
Die Stadt unterstützt mehrere soziale Projekte.
The city supports several social welfare projects.
Er verhält sich im Team sehr sozial.
He behaves very considerately within the team.
gesellschaftlich
Meaning and usage: Gesellschaftlich places something within society, including its political, economic and social relationships. It is useful for a societal change or a broad public debate. It also has senses concerning manners or social life, so it does not refer exclusively to politics. The word’s connection to Gesellschaft helps, but the noun it describes still determines the intended sense.
Grammar: Adjective: gesellschaftliche Veränderungen, eine gesellschaftliche Debatte. Predicative/adverbial form: gesellschaftlich, without an added ending.
Der Text beschreibt gesellschaftliche Veränderungen im Alltag.
The text describes societal changes in everyday life.
Diese Frage ist gesellschaftlich umstritten.
This issue is controversial within society.
gesellig
Meaning and usage: Gesellig is especially useful when someone enjoys being with others or a gathering has pleasant company. It can describe an evening rather than a person: ein geselliger Abend. It also has group-living uses for animals. For an English social person who likes meeting friends, gesellig commonly captures the intended sense more clearly than an unqualified sozial.
Grammar: Adjective: ein geselliger Mensch, ein geselliger Abend. Predicative: sie ist gesellig. Comparative geselliger and superlative am geselligsten.
Meine Nachbarin ist gesellig und lädt gern Freunde ein.
My neighbor is sociable and enjoys inviting friends over.
Wir verbringen einen geselligen Abend auf dem Balkon.
We spend a convivial evening on the balcony.
Overlap and context
Gesellschaftliche and soziale questions can overlap because both may concern society and human relationships. Gesellig narrows attention toward company and sociability, but it does not measure kindness or responsibility. A quiet person can behave sozial; a gesellige person need not always be considerate.
Common mistakes
- Do not automatically use sozial for someone who loves socializing. Gesellig is often the clearer description.
- Do not restrict gesellschaftlich to government. Social norms and manners are among its recorded uses.
- Learn fixed combinations such as soziale Medien. Replacing the adjective according to an invented rule can produce unnatural wording.
Memory aid: Sozial involves social relations or care; gesellschaftlich puts society in view; gesellig enjoys company.
