How do merken, bemerken, erinnern and vergessen differ?

Merken can mean notice; sich etwas merken means retain something in memory. Bemerken means notice and can also mean remark. Sich erinnern means remember something already experienced or known; jemanden erinnern means remind someone. Vergessen means forget. The reflexive pronoun is crucial: Ich merke den Unterschied notices a difference, while Ich merke mir das Wort stores a word for later. In English, remember can describe both learning information and retrieving it; German often makes those situations clearer through the construction.
