wissen
Meaning and usage: Use wissen when you can state information: a departure time, an answer or what happened. A clause often supplies the content, but expressions such as die Antwort wissen are also standard.
Grammar: Irregular forms: ich weiß, du weißt, wir wissen; wusste, hat gewusst. A dass-clause has its conjugated verb at the end. Indirect questions work too: wissen, wann …
Ich weiß, wann der Kurs beginnt.
I know when the course starts.
kennen
Meaning and usage: Use kennen for familiarity, whether personal acquaintance or knowledge of a city, song or method. Kennen does not guarantee deep expertise; add gut or nur vom Namen when the degree matters.
Grammar: Mixed verb: kannte, hat gekannt. It normally has an accusative object. Wir kennen uns expresses mutual acquaintance; uns here refers to both people.
Ich kenne die Stadt, aber nicht jedes Viertel.
I know the city, but not every neighborhood.
erkennen
Meaning and usage: Use erkennen when you identify what you perceive or notice a significant feature. Recognition can rely on voice or another clue. The verb is broader than recognizing someone you previously met: you can also recognize a problem.
Grammar: Inseparable er-; erkannte, hat erkannt, without ge-. The identified person or thing is accusative. An + dative can name the identifying clue.
Ich erkenne Paul an seiner Stimme.
I recognize Paul by his voice.
kennenlernen
Meaning and usage: Use kennenlernen for acquiring familiarity through contact. Meeting someone is one common use; becoming familiar with a new town or another way of life also fits.
Grammar: Separable compound: Ich lerne sie kennen; hat kennengelernt; kennenzulernen. The separated spelling kennen lernen is also accepted. The object is accusative.
Im Kurs habe ich meine Nachbarin kennengelernt.
I met my neighbor in the course.
Overlap and context
Ich kenne die Antwort and Ich weiß die Antwort can both work. The former presents the answer as familiar; the latter emphasizes possessing the information. Ich kenne Lea describes an existing relationship, whereas Ich lerne Lea kennen describes the process of becoming acquainted. Erkennen focuses on identification rather than how long you have known the person.
Common mistakes
- Do not replace Ich kenne Lea with Ich weiß Lea.
- Do not assume kennenlernen applies only to people.
- Remember weiß in the singular; Ich wisse is not the ordinary present-tense statement.
Memory aid: Know the fact, know the person, recognize the voice, meet the person: wissen, kennen, erkennen, kennenlernen. Use these scenes as starting points rather than rigid translation rules.
Try it
Someone points to a woman you have met before. Complete: Ich ___ sie an ihrem Lachen.

erkenne
The clue an ihrem Lachen identifies her by her laugh. Kenne would express familiarity but would not be the clearest verb for this recognition task.
