künstlich
Meaning and usage: Use künstlich for something produced through human technical means, often in imitation of something natural. Artificial flowers and artificial light are ordinary examples. With behavior or an expression, it can suggest something forced or affected. The word does not automatically mean useless, harmful or low quality.
Grammar: An inflectable adjective: künstliche Blumen, ein künstlicher See. After a linking verb or when describing how something seems, it has no ending: das Licht ist künstlich; die Stimme klingt künstlich. It does not require a particular object case.
Im fensterlosen Raum brauchen wir künstliches Licht.
In the windowless room we need artificial light.
Sein Lächeln wirkte künstlich.
His smile seemed forced.
künstlerisch
Meaning and usage: Use künstlerisch for work, expression or ability connected with art, or for something shaped in an artistic way. It can describe artistic direction and freedom, not only an object judged beautiful. Saying that something is künstlerisch does not by itself identify the materials as natural or artificial.
Grammar: An inflectable adjective: künstlerische Arbeit, ein künstlerisches Projekt. When modifying a verb it stays unchanged: etwas künstlerisch gestalten. Predicative use likewise has no adjective ending.
Sie übernimmt die künstlerische Leitung des Festivals.
She takes over the festival's artistic direction.
Die Fassade wurde künstlerisch gestaltet.
The facade was designed artistically.
Overlap and context
A sculpture may be artistically designed and made from artificial materials. Both adjectives can therefore apply to the same project, but they answer different questions. Künstlich asks about artificial production or unnatural appearance; künstlerisch connects the work with art. Neither adjective simply means that a person made the object.
Common mistakes
- Do not translate English 'artistic' as künstlich.
- Do not describe an artist's talent as künstliches Talent when you mean künstlerisches Talent.
- An artificial product is not necessarily a fake or a deception; context determines any negative implication.
Memory aid: Künstler is an artist, so künstlerisch belongs to art.
