Kenntnis

Meaning and usage: Use Kenntnis for knowing that something exists or knowing about its details. In applications, Deutschkenntnisse means knowledge of German, rather than a particular discovery about it. The singular appears in formal expressions about awareness. The plural presents what a person knows or can do in a field.

Grammar: Feminine: die Kenntnis, genitive der Kenntnis, plural die Kenntnisse. The awareness sense normally has no plural; the skills or expertise sense is normally plural. Common patterns include Kenntnis von + dative and Kenntnisse in + dative. Learn fixed expressions such as zur Kenntnis nehmen as whole units.

Ich hatte keine Kenntnis von der Änderung.

I was not aware of the change.

Für diese Stelle brauchst du gute Deutschkenntnisse.

You need good German language skills for this position.

Erkenntnis

Meaning and usage: Erkenntnis highlights understanding gained by examining, thinking about, or experiencing something. A scientist can report neue Erkenntnisse; a learner can reach a conclusion about what works. It need not be a sudden personal revelation: a body of research findings can also be called Erkenntnisse.

Grammar: In everyday knowledge and insight contexts: die Erkenntnis, genitive der Erkenntnis, plural die Erkenntnisse. The abstract faculty of cognition has no plural. A useful construction is zu der Erkenntnis kommen, dass … . A separate specialist legal use with das is outside this lesson.

Ich kam zu der Erkenntnis, dass ich mehr Hörübungen brauche.

I came to the realization that I need more listening exercises.

Die Studie liefert neue Erkenntnisse über das Lernen.

The study provides new findings about learning.

Overlap and context

Someone can possess Kenntnisse about a topic and gain an Erkenntnis from using them. Neither word automatically tells you whether the knowledge is correct. In research, Erkenntnisse emphasizes results; Kenntnisse emphasizes available expertise or familiarity. Choose the perspective you mean, rather than translating every English occurrence of “knowledge” with one noun.

Common mistakes

  • Do not write gute Erkenntnisse in Deutsch when you mean good German skills: use gute Deutschkenntnisse.
  • Do not assume Erkenntnis always means a sudden moment of revelation.
  • Keep the plural distinction: Kenntnis of an event is awareness, while Kenntnisse in a subject describe knowledge or skills.

Memory aid: Kenntnis: what you know. Erkenntnis: what you have come to understand or find out.
