hinüber

Meaning and usage: Hinüber directs movement across a boundary such as a river, road, room or intervening space. The boundary need not be named if everyone can see or infer it. The destination is the other side from the viewpoint used in the sentence.

Grammar: Uninflected adverb; also a separable verb particle. Hinübergehen becomes Er geht hinüber; zu-infinitive: hinüberzugehen; perfect: ist hinübergegangen. The location phrase, not hinüber itself, determines noun case.

Wir gehen zum Café auf der anderen Straßenseite hinüber.

We are going across to the café on the other side of the street.

Sie warf den Ball über den Zaun hinüber.

She threw the ball across to the other side of the fence.

herüber

Meaning and usage: Herüber reverses the viewpoint of hinüber. A person on the far bank can come herüber to the bank where you are standing. The distance may be small; the important point is movement toward the reference side, not how far someone travels.

Grammar: Uninflected adverb; also a separable verb particle. Herüberkommen becomes Er kommt herüber; zu-infinitive: herüberzukommen; perfect: ist herübergekommen. It can accompany different movement verbs, not only kommen.

Wir stehen am linken Ufer. Komm mit dem Boot herüber!

We are standing on the left bank. Come across to us by boat!

Kannst du den Ball zu mir herüberwerfen?

Can you throw the ball across to me?

drüben

Meaning and usage: Drüben places someone or something on the other side of a contextually relevant boundary. It does not by itself mean moving across that boundary. In von drüben, the preposition adds the idea of origin: from over there.

Grammar: Uninflected location adverb. It can stand without a noun phrase: Sie wartet drüben. More specific phrases can be added: drüben auf der anderen Straßenseite. It does not govern a noun case.

Das Café drüben hat bis zehn geöffnet.

The café over there is open until ten.

Unsere Freunde warten drüben am Bahnhof.

Our friends are waiting over there at the station.

Overlap and context

If you cross the road toward the café, you go hinüber. From inside that café, someone can invite you to come herüber. The café remains drüben when described from the first side. A verb alone does not settle the choice: the speaker’s reference point and the movement or location meaning do. Duden also records colloquial non-spatial meanings of hinüber; the table focuses on the spatial contrast.

Common mistakes

  • Do not treat drüben as the default destination word simply because English says “over there.” German distinguishes location from direction.
  • Do not decide between hinüber and herüber solely by distance; identify which side is treated as here.
  • Keep a separable particle at the end in Er kommt herüber, while the infinitive is herüberkommen.

Memory aid: Hinüber goes across away; herüber comes across here; drüben stays over there.

Try it

You and your friend are on opposite banks. You call from your bank: “Komm zu mir ___!”

Show the answer

herüber

Your friend is moving from the other bank toward your reference side. Drüben would name a location rather than this direction.
