Meaning, sentence patterns and examples
| Word | Core meaning | Typical context | Grammar |
|---|---|---|---|
| hier | here; at this point | the current or indicated place | local adverb; no noun case |
| da | here/there; present | a pointed-to place or presence | adverb; separate causal conjunction use |
| dort | there; at that place | a place distinct from the current reference | local adverb; von dort for origin |
hier
Meaning and usage: Use hier for the speaker’s or indicated place, or the present passage or situation. Hier im Text means here in the text, without a physical location you occupy. Hier can accompany handing someone an object. Conversation or gesture establishes the reference point.
Grammar: An adverb: unchanged and without its own noun-case government. Hier steht der Tisch keeps the finite verb second. A following prepositional phrase chooses its own case: hier im Zimmer. Von hier names an origin; hier alone is not a directional hin/her construction.
Hier im Zimmer ist es wärmer als draußen.
Here in the room, it is warmer than outside.
da
Meaning and usage: Use da for a location indicated or already understood, and for being present or available. Ich bin da can announce that you have arrived or are available; it need not mean that you are far away. Da can also refer to a time or situation, and the separate conjunction da means since or because.
Grammar: Adverbial da retains main-clause verb order: Da ist der Eingang. In Ich bin da, the adverb follows the finite verb. Conjunction da instead introduces a verb-final subordinate clause: Da es regnet, bleiben wir hier. Do not confuse the two grammatical uses merely because their spelling matches.
Bist du schon da? Ich warte am Eingang.
Are you there yet? I am waiting at the entrance.
Da ist noch ein freier Platz.
There is still a free seat there.
dort
Meaning and usage: Use dort for a place distinct from the immediate here, either named earlier or visible. It does not require a measurable long distance: a spot across the room can be dort if the speaker frames it that way.
Grammar: Local adverb: uninflected. Dort arbeitet meine Schwester has a second-position finite verb. Von dort refers to origin, while dorthin explicitly marks direction towards that place. A noun phrase describing the location has the case required by its own preposition.
Meine Schwester wohnt in Bonn. Dort arbeitet sie auch.
My sister lives in Bonn. She works there too.
Overlap and context
Da and dort overlap for there; da also overlaps with hier in a presence announcement or gesture. You cannot identify the precise place from da without context. Hier can indicate a map location rather than the speaker’s bodily position. These are reference choices, not one-meter, ten-meter and farther-away categories.
Common mistakes
- Do not give da one compulsory English translation; it can indicate here, there or presence.
- Do not assign invented distance thresholds to hier, da and dort.
- Distinguish local adverb Da steht … from causal conjunction Da … steht, …; the clause structure changes.
Memory aid: Hier: this place. Dort: that place. Da: the place or presence understood in context. Follow the speaker's gesture and the previously named location.
Try it
You announce that you have arrived. Is Ich bin da a natural sentence?
Show the answer
Yes: Ich bin da.
Da can express being present. It does not require being at a distant place and can mean I am here in this context.
