heimlich
Meaning and usage: Use heimlich when an action happens out of sight or someone hides a feeling, wish or intention. It can suggest avoiding exposure or bypassing a restriction, though a harmless surprise can also be arranged heimlich. Heimlich auf die Uhr sehen describes a discreet action; a heimlicher Wunsch describes a feeling that is not openly expressed.
Grammar: As an adjective it takes endings: ein heimliches Treffen. Used adverbially, it stays unchanged: Sie liest heimlich. It can also stand after sein. The older meaning cozy or homelike is not the ordinary modern meaning being taught here; do not infer today's meaning directly from Heim.

geheim
Meaning and usage: Use geheim for information, plans or events deliberately kept from other people or the public. In eine geheime Wahl, the individual vote remains undisclosed. It can also describe something mysterious or inexplicable, such as a geheime Anziehungskraft. Not every secret is an official classified document.
Grammar: Before a noun, use adjective endings: ein geheimer Plan. After bleiben or sein, the form is unchanged: Der Plan bleibt geheim. Write etwas geheim halten as separate words in this construction. The fixed nominal expression im Geheimen uses a capital G; ordinary adjective geheim is lower-case.
Die genaue Adresse bleibt vorerst geheim.
The exact address will remain secret for now.
Wir müssen den Plan noch geheim halten.
We still have to keep the plan secret.
Overlap and context
Heimliche Verhandlungen and geheime Verhandlungen both describe negotiations hidden from others. Heimlich may foreground the unnoticed conduct; geheim may foreground restricted knowledge. The difference is often an emphasis rather than two exclusive facts. Likewise, im Geheimen can mean secretly and overlap with heimlich. Decide what is hidden—the action, the information or a private feeling—and choose the familiar phrase for that context.
Common mistakes
- Do not claim heimlich can never stand before a noun: ein heimliches Treffen is normal.
- Do not claim geheim cannot modify an action: geheim abstimmen is an established construction.
- Avoid translating heimlich as homely or cozy in ordinary modern contexts.
- Remember the spelling difference between an adjective phrase such as geheime Pläne and the nominal expression im Geheimen.
Memory aid: Heimlich asks whether others notice it. Geheim asks whether others are meant to know it. These emphasis questions can both apply to the same event.
