Choose what you actually want to say
German has several useful ways to express affection. The relationship, tone and moment matter; a short phrase cannot carry all of that context by itself.
| German expression | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Ich liebe dich. | I love you. |
| Ich habe dich lieb. | I am very fond of you / I love you affectionately. |
| Du bist mir wichtig. | You matter to me. |
| Ich vermisse dich. | I miss you. |
| Ich bin in dich verliebt. | I am in love with you. |
| Ich bin gern mit dir zusammen. | I enjoy being with you. |

Dich and dir are not interchangeable
In Ich liebe dich, dich is the accusative object. In Du bist mir wichtig, mir is dative. Keep the complete construction: Ich bin in dich verliebt contains in plus accusative as part of that expression.
Ich habe dich lieb is often shortened in speech to Ich hab dich lieb. That is a register difference, not a separate tense. These expressions do not encode the speaker’s gender or the Vietnamese kinship/address term to choose in translation.
A short exchange and an honest reply
A reply may return the feeling, acknowledge it or ask for time. Choose a truthful response rather than treating an affection phrase as a question with one required answer.
- A
- Du bist mir sehr wichtig.
- B
- Das freut mich. Du mir auch.
- A
- Ich bin gern mit dir zusammen.
- B
- Ich auch. Lass uns am Wochenende etwas unternehmen.
Build a small message of your own
Choose one expression and add a concrete reason or memory: Ich bin gern mit dir zusammen. Unser Spaziergang gestern war schön. Do not add every strong phrase from the table; a short message can be more natural.
Then prepare a different possible reply: Danke, dass du mir das sagst. Ich brauche etwas Zeit. Practise both saying something and listening to an answer that may be different from your own.

Questions learners ask
Must Ich habe dich lieb always be non-romantic?
No. It often expresses familiar affection, but people also use it in romantic relationships. Context and personal usage matter.
Does Ich liebe dich tell me the speaker’s gender?
No. Choose an English or Vietnamese translation that fits the actual participants; German ich and dich do not specify that distinction.
