How do you give and respond to compliments in German?

A useful German compliment names something specific: Deine Erklärung war sehr klar or Das steht dir gut. A natural reply can be as short as Danke, das freut mich. Add detail when you genuinely want to continue the conversation.

You understood a colleague’s explanation, liked a friend’s jacket or enjoyed a meal. Naming the specific thing makes your compliment clearer than saying something vague about the person.

This guide focuses on giving and receiving everyday compliments. Each response is a model you can adapt to the relationship and situation.

Name the thing you appreciated

Start with a visible item, an action or a result. Keep the statement proportionate to what you actually mean.

Keep the verb pattern with the compliment

Die Jacke steht dir gut uses the dative dir. In Das freut mich, mich is accusative. You cannot exchange these forms just because both refer to a person.

In Das hast du gut erklärt, Das is placed first and hast is the finite verb in second position. Erklärt comes at the end. The compliment describes a completed explanation, rather than assigning a permanent quality to the person.

Receive the compliment, then choose a follow-up

A
Deine Erklärung war sehr klar. Jetzt verstehe ich den Plan.
B
Danke, das freut mich.
A
Besonders das Beispiel mit den Terminen hat geholfen.
B
Gut zu wissen. Dann verwende ich es beim nächsten Mal wieder.

Build a compliment from a real detail

Choose one situation and write the specific noun or action first: die Erklärung, die Jacke, das Essen. Then choose the matching verb and a short reason. Avoid turning every compliment into a dramatic judgment about the whole person.

Practise two possible replies: a short acceptance and an acceptance with one additional fact. Danke, ich habe die Jacke gestern gefunden continues a clothing conversation; Danke, das freut mich can close the exchange neatly.
