wohnen
Meaning and usage: Wohnen is the useful default for describing your home or accommodation. It can also describe temporary accommodation, including a hotel stay, so it does not require permanent residence. The focus is where you are housed. It does not mean be alive, and it says little by itself about your lifestyle, feelings or legal residence status.
Grammar: Regular, nonseparable: wohnt, wohnte, hat gewohnt. Usually intransitive. Static in + dative identifies a place; bei + dative identifies a host.
Ich wohne in einer kleinen Wohnung neben dem Park.
I live in a small apartment next to the park.
Während des Praktikums wohne ich bei meiner Tante.
During the internship I am staying with my aunt.
leben
Meaning and usage: Leben is broader than having accommodation. It says someone is alive, describes life in a country or names how someone lives. Ich lebe in Deutschland can focus on the country in which your life takes place rather than your particular dwelling. It remains perfectly compatible with living there only temporarily. Context, not a permanent-versus-temporary rule, controls the meaning.
Grammar: Regular, nonseparable: lebt, lebte, hat gelebt. Usually intransitive; in + dative for location; von + dative for what supports someone.
Meine Großeltern leben seit zehn Jahren in Bonn.
My grandparents have lived in Bonn for ten years.
Er lebt sehr ruhig und reist nur selten.
He leads a very quiet life and rarely travels.
übernachten
Meaning and usage: Übernachten singles out sleeping or staying somewhere overnight. It is useful for travel plans and visits. It can cover one night or repeated nights; it does not always mean a single isolated visit. The place may be stated, but the verb is complete without an object when the location is already known.
Grammar: Regular, inseparable: übernachtet, übernachtete, hat übernachtet. No direct object needed; in + dative or bei + dative commonly identifies the overnight location.
Nach dem Konzert übernachten wir bei Freunden.
After the concert we are staying overnight with friends.
Overlap and context
Ich wohne in Hamburg and Ich lebe in Hamburg can both report your residence. Wohnen directs attention toward accommodation; leben toward your life there. Someone can wohnen in a hotel for several weeks and übernachten there each night. Avoid falsely treating these as incompatible durations.
Common mistakes
- Ich wohne noch does not express I am still alive. Use Ich lebe noch for that meaning.
- Do not separate übernachten: Ich übernachte hier, without moving über to the end.
- The location after static in is dative: in einem Hotel. The verb alone does not turn it into a direction.
Memory aid: Wohnen answers the housing question; leben describes life; übernachten identifies the night.
Try it
Which verb clearly says you will spend the night: Morgen ___ ich bei Anna?
Show the answer
übernachte
Übernachten makes the overnight meaning explicit. Wohnen or leben would not specify that on their own.
