sobald

Meaning and usage: Sobald connects an action to the moment another event happens. It highlights the start of a response, rather than how long the response lasts. Depending on the situation, “as soon as” promises prompt action without stating an exact number of seconds.

Grammar: Subordinating conjunction; no inflection. The finite verb goes last: sobald der Kurs beginnt. If the subordinate clause comes first, the main clause starts with its finite verb: Sobald der Kurs beginnt, legen wir die Handys weg. Use a comma between the clauses.

Ruf mich an, sobald du zu Hause angekommen bist.

Call me as soon as you have arrived home.

Sobald die Ampel grün wird, können wir losfahren.

As soon as the traffic light turns green, we can set off.

solange

Meaning and usage: Solange describes the period during which something is true. A condition can be part of that period: permission may last only while someone follows a rule. It often suggests a boundary—when that situation stops, the other action or permission may stop too.

Grammar: Subordinating conjunction; no inflection. The finite verb goes last: solange es regnet. Fronting the whole subordinate clause places the main-clause finite verb next: Solange es regnet, bleiben wir hier. The shorter form solang is also recorded.

Solange es regnet, bleiben wir im Café.

As long as it is raining, we will stay in the café.

Du kannst mein Fahrrad benutzen, solange du vorsichtig damit umgehst.

You can use my bicycle as long as you handle it carefully.

Overlap and context

Compare the same situation: “Sobald es regnet, gehen wir hinein” tells you when to move indoors. “Solange es regnet, bleiben wir drinnen” tells you how long to stay there. Neither word requires a past or future tense by itself; the event and the surrounding context determine the tense.

Common mistakes

  • Do not use sobald when you mean the entire time a condition lasts. It identifies a trigger, not that whole period.
  • Keep the conjugated verb at the end of the subordinate clause, including ist in sobald du angekommen bist.
  • Do not assume every written so lange is the conjunction solange. In “Warum dauert das so lange?”, so intensifies the duration and the words remain separate.

Memory aid: Sobald marks the starting bell. Solange marks the stretch of time that follows.

Try it

Choose sobald or solange: “___ die Bibliothek öffnet, gehe ich hinein. Ich bleibe dort, ___ ich noch lernen muss.”
