Setzen vs. sitzen: sitting down or already seated?

Use sitzen for being seated. Use sich setzen for taking a seat, and jemanden setzen when you put someone into a seated position. The change from one position to another belongs to setzen; the existing seated position belongs to sitzen. Compare the person taking a chair with the same person already on it.

setzen

Meaning and usage: Sich setzen describes the act of sitting down, even when you are moving only a short distance. Setzen can also mean positioning an object or establishing a situation: you can set a pot on a cooker or put a matter on an agenda. In this lesson, focus first on the seated-position meaning.

Grammar: Regular, nonseparable verb: setzt, setzte, hat gesetzt. In sich setzen, the reflexive pronoun is accusative: ich setze mich, du setzt dich. In someone-else constructions, use an accusative object. A directional auf or an phrase takes accusative: auf den Stuhl, an den Tisch.

Bitte setzen Sie sich auf den freien Stuhl.

Please sit down on the empty chair.

Die Mutter setzt das Kind vorsichtig auf die Bank.

The mother carefully seats the child on the bench.

sitzen

Meaning and usage: Sitzen describes the position rather than the act of adopting it. You can sit reading, working or waiting; the activity does not change the basic choice. In figurative uses, clothes can sit or fit in a particular way, and someone can sit in prison. Those meanings are extensions, not reasons to switch to setzen.

Grammar: Irregular, nonseparable verb: sitzt, saß, hat gesessen. Southern German, Austrian and Swiss usage also has ist gesessen. The seated-position sense does not need a direct object. A location phrase with auf or an takes dative: auf dem Stuhl, am Tisch.

Sie sitzt schon seit einer Stunde am Fenster.

She has been sitting by the window for an hour.

Wir haben im Garten gesessen und die Reise geplant.

We sat in the garden and planned the trip.

Overlap and context

The two verbs can describe consecutive moments: Ich setze mich means I sit down; jetzt sitze ich means now I am seated. Case follows the role of the prepositional phrase. Do not turn this into the general rule that all physical movement uses accusative: a person can move around within a location described by dative.

Common mistakes

  • Say Ich setze mich, not Ich setze, when you mean that you take a seat.
  • Do not mix regular gesetzt with irregular gesessen.
  • Do not correct regional bin gesessen as universally ungrammatical; it is established regional standard usage.

Memory aid: Setzen changes the position; sitzen describes the position.

Try it

Choose the verb: Der Besucher ___ bereits auf dem Sofa, als ich hereinkomme.
