Stelle, Platz and Ort: which German word means place?

Stelle often means a particular spot, position or passage, and also a job. Platz can mean a spot, seat, public square or available space. Ort is a location or locality, including a town or village. They overlap when describing physical places, so English place does not have one fixed German equivalent. The surrounding situation matters: a seat on a train, a passage in a book and the location of an event are different kinds of place.

At a glance
WordCore meaningTypical contextGrammar
Stellespot; position; jobA specific point within somethingDie Stelle; plural die Stellen. Common combinations: an einer Stelle, eine Stelle im Text, eine Stelle suchen. Location an takes dative here; a destination can take accusative.
Platzplace; seat; space; squareRoom for something or an allocated positionDer Platz; plural die Plätze. The available-space sense normally has no plural. Useful phrases: Platz haben, Platz nehmen, einen Platz reservieren.
Ortlocation; localityWhere something happens or a settlementDer Ort; ordinary plural die Orte. The plural Örter belongs to specialized uses and is not the normal plural for towns or meeting locations. Common phrases: an einem Ort, vor Ort.

Stelle

Meaning and usage: Stelle identifies a point or section in a larger space, text or structure. Eine Stelle im Buch is a passage, not the entire setting of the story. In employment, eine Stelle is a position or job. An deiner Stelle means in your position, or if I were you.

Grammar: Die Stelle; plural die Stellen. Common combinations: an einer Stelle, eine Stelle im Text, eine Stelle suchen. Location an takes dative here; a destination can take accusative.

An dieser Stelle ist die Straße beschädigt.

The road is damaged at this spot.

Sie sucht eine Stelle als Verkäuferin.

She is looking for a job as a sales assistant.

Platz

Meaning and usage: Platz may be countable, as with a seat, a square or a course place. It may also be uncountable space: Ich habe Platz means I have room. When asking whether a seat is free, Platz is a natural everyday choice. A street square is also a Platz.

Grammar: Der Platz; plural die Plätze. The available-space sense normally has no plural. Useful phrases: Platz haben, Platz nehmen, einen Platz reservieren.

Ist der Platz neben Ihnen frei?

Is the seat next to you free?

In meinem Koffer ist noch Platz für ein Buch.

There is still room for a book in my suitcase.

Ort

Meaning and usage: Ort names a location without necessarily treating it as a seat or a patch within a larger object. It can refer to the place of an event, a quiet location or a town or village. The meaning does not guarantee a large settlement.

Grammar: Der Ort; ordinary plural die Orte. The plural Örter belongs to specialized uses and is not the normal plural for towns or meeting locations. Common phrases: an einem Ort, vor Ort.

Wir suchen einen ruhigen Ort für das Gespräch.

We are looking for a quiet place for the conversation.

Der kleine Ort liegt am Fluss.

The small town is beside the river.

Overlap and context

A pleasant camping spot may be eine schöne Stelle, ein schöner Platz or ein schöner Ort. The choice changes the emphasis rather than making two versions automatically wrong. The distinctions become clearer in characteristic phrases: a passage is eine Stelle, available room is Platz, and an event’s location is its Ort.

Common mistakes

  • For available room, avoid treating Platz as a countable object: Wir haben noch Platz is enough.
  • A job opening is usually eine Stelle, not an Ort.

Memory aid: Spot within something: Stelle. Seat or space: Platz. Location: Ort. Keep these typical uses while allowing overlap for real physical places.

Try it

Choose: Ich brauche mehr ___ in meinem Rucksack.

Show the answer

Platz

The sentence asks for available space, not another locality or a specific passage.

Haus, Zuhause and Heim: three ways German talks about home

Haus usually names a building; Zuhause names the place you regard as home; Heim can mean a home with a sense of comfort or a residential institution. You can have a Zuhause in an apartment without owning a Haus. The noun Zuhause is capitalized; the adverbial expression zu Hause or zuhause means “at home”.

At a glance
WordCore meaningTypical contextGrammar
Haushouse; buildinga physical buildingdas Haus; plural Häuser
Zuhausehomewhere you live or feel at homedas Zuhause; normally no plural
Heimhome; residential institutiona domestic home or care residencedas Heim; plural Heime

Haus

Meaning and usage: Haus often means a building, especially one used for living. It can also refer to a company’s premises, a household or an organization in established expressions. It is not a reliable translation of every English home: an apartment can be someone’s home.

Grammar: Das Haus; genitive des Hauses; plural die Häuser. Im Haus means inside the building. Zu Hause is a fixed adverbial phrase; Hause here is an older dative form, not a different plural.

Das Haus an der Ecke hat sechs Wohnungen.

The house on the corner has six apartments.

Zuhause

Meaning and usage: Zuhause names a person’s home as a place of living and belonging. It does not require ownership or a particular building type. The noun can appear with a possessive, an article or an adjective. Distinguish it from the expression for being at home.

Grammar: Das Zuhause; genitive des Zuhauses or Zuhause. Normally used without a plural. Noun: ein neues Zuhause. Adverbial: zu Hause or zuhause; direction: nach Hause.

In unserer kleinen Wohnung haben wir ein gemütliches Zuhause gefunden.

We have found a cosy home in our small apartment.

Heim

Meaning and usage: Heim can describe a comfortable personal home, often in a more elevated or emotionally coloured expression. It also names an institution where people live, such as a care home. Context is essential: im Heim often concerns a residential institution.

Grammar: Das Heim; genitive des Heims or Heimes; plural die Heime. The personal-home sense rarely needs a plural; institution plurals are ordinary. Im Heim uses in + dative for location.

Mein Großvater lebt in einem Heim in der Nähe seiner Freunde.

My grandfather lives in a residential home near his friends.

Overlap and context

Ein schönes Heim and ein schönes Zuhause can both describe a welcoming home. Haus foregrounds the building in many contexts, but it also has figurative and organizational meanings. Do not define Heim only as an institution or Zuhause only as an emotion: both can refer to a real place of residence.

Common mistakes

  • For “I am at home”, use Ich bin zu Hause or Ich bin zuhause, not Ich bin Zuhause.
  • For “I am going home”, use Ich gehe nach Hause.
  • Do not call every apartment a Haus merely because it is someone’s home.

Memory aid: Building: Haus. Your home: Zuhause. Domestic or institutional home: Heim. Learn “at home” as its own phrase.

Try it

Choose Zuhause or zu Hause: Wir suchen ein neues ___ .

Show the answer

Zuhause

The article ein and adjective neues identify a capitalized noun.

Wohnung vs. Wohnsitz vs. Unterkunft: apartment, residence, or accommodation?

Wohnung usually means an apartment or self-contained home. Wohnsitz emphasizes the place where someone resides, often in administrative language. Unterkunft is accommodation or a place to stay, frequently for a temporary stay. The same apartment can be your Wohnung, your accommodation, and the location of your Wohnsitz.

At a glance
WordCore meaningTypical contextGrammar
Wohnungapartment; residential unitrenting or describing a homedie Wohnung; plural Wohnungen
Wohnsitzplace of residenceresidence location; administrative descriptionsder Wohnsitz; plural Wohnsitze
Unterkunftaccommodation; place to staytravel; guest stays; finding lodgingdie Unterkunft; plural Unterkünfte

Wohnung

Meaning and usage: Wohnung usually refers to a residential unit, often containing several rooms. Use it when discussing rent, the kitchen, or moving into an apartment. It identifies the kind of living space more specifically than Unterkunft does. It is not the usual name for a hotel room.

Grammar: Feminine: die Wohnung, genitive der Wohnung, plural die Wohnungen. Common combinations include eine Wohnung mieten and eine Wohnung beziehen. With in, location uses dative: in einer Wohnung; moving into it uses accusative: in eine Wohnung.

Unsere Wohnung hat zwei Zimmer und einen Balkon.

Our apartment has two rooms and a balcony.

Wir ziehen nächste Woche in die neue Wohnung.

We are moving into the new apartment next week.

Wohnsitz

Meaning and usage: Wohnsitz foregrounds where a person resides, rather than the rooms or building layout. You may encounter it on forms or in phrases describing someone's residence. This language distinction does not establish any particular legal registration requirement.

Grammar: Masculine: der Wohnsitz, genitive des Wohnsitzes, plural die Wohnsitze. A common construction is seinen Wohnsitz in + place haben. The expression ohne festen Wohnsitz describes someone without a fixed residence. The plural exists, though ordinary conversation often uses the singular.

Sie hat ihren Wohnsitz in Hamburg.

Her place of residence is Hamburg.

Unterkunft

Meaning and usage: Unterkunft names a place where someone can stay. It can be a hotel, hostel, room, or apartment, so it does not promise a particular building type. Temporary lodging is a central use, but duration alone is not a reliable test for every context.

Grammar: Feminine: die Unterkunft, genitive der Unterkunft, plural die Unterkünfte. Duden notes that the plural is relatively uncommon in the general accommodation sense; comparing individual places to stay makes it natural. Useful combinations include eine Unterkunft suchen and eine Unterkunft buchen.

Für das Wochenende suchen wir eine günstige Unterkunft.

We are looking for affordable accommodation for the weekend.

Overlap and context

If you rent an apartment for a holiday, it is a Wohnung and can be described as your Unterkunft. If you live there, it may also be connected with your Wohnsitz. The nouns answer different questions: what living space, where residence is located, and where someone can stay. Avoid treating them as labels for three mutually exclusive buildings.

Common mistakes

  • Do not use Wohnsitz when asking whether an apartment has a balcony.
  • Do not assume Unterkunft always means a hotel or hostel.
  • Remember the umlaut in Unterkünfte; Wohnungen and Wohnsitze have different plural patterns.

Memory aid: Wohnung describes the home; Wohnsitz identifies residence; Unterkunft provides a place to stay.

Try it

Complete a travel request: Ich brauche für zwei Nächte eine ___.

Show the answer

Unterkunft

You need a place to stay without specifying an apartment or a residence location.

Land vs. Staat: country, countryside and political state

Land can mean country, federal state, land or countryside. Staat emphasizes a political state and its institutions or territory. A country can be called both ein Land and ein Staat. When Land means countryside or dry land, Staat is not a substitute.

At a glance
WordCore meaningTypical contextGrammar
Landcountry; land; countryside; federal stateGeography, everyday country names and rural lifeDas Land; countries/federal states: die Länder; countryside usually uncountable.
Staatpolitical state; state institutionsGovernment, organized political communities and state territoryDer Staat; plural die Staaten.

Land

Meaning and usage: Land is the broader everyday word. It can name a country, a German federal state, dry land or rural areas. Auf dem Land means in the countryside, while an Land can mean ashore. These are separate senses of the same noun. The article and surrounding phrase guide interpretation: a bare English country translation misses much of its range.

Grammar: Das Land. Countries and federal states: plural die Länder. Some literary or fixed uses have Lande. The ground/countryside senses are commonly uncountable; genitive des Landes.

Sie möchte später auf dem Land wohnen.

She would like to live in the countryside later.

Wir haben in drei verschiedenen Ländern gearbeitet.

We have worked in three different countries.

Staat

Meaning and usage: Staat identifies a political community through its organized institutions, authority or territory. It is useful when the point is government rather than rural life. Der Staat can refer broadly to public institutions and their activity. The word can also appear in other established senses, but the political meaning is the relevant one when discussing countries.

Grammar: Der Staat; plural die Staaten. Genitive des Staates or des Staats. Adjective staatlich means relating to the state; it is a separate derived word.

Der Staat finanziert einen Teil des Projekts.

The state funds part of the project.

Mehrere Staaten haben das Abkommen unterzeichnet.

Several states have signed the agreement.

Overlap and context

Germany can be described as a Land or Staat depending on emphasis. A German Bundesland is a Land within a federal political system, so translating every English state as Staat is unsafe. Geographic territory and political institutions are connected; the words do not create a universal geography-versus-politics divide.

Common mistakes

  • Use auf dem Land for countryside, not auf dem Staat. The latter does not carry the rural meaning.
  • Land is neuter and Staat masculine. The shared English country translation does not determine German gender.
  • Die Länder is the normal plural for countries. Die Lande belongs to narrower literary or established expressions; do not choose it as the everyday default.

Memory aid: Land has room for land, countryside and countries. Staat brings political organization and its institutions into focus.

Try it

Which word fits countryside: Ich wohne lieber auf dem ___?

Show the answer

Land

Auf dem Land is the ordinary expression for living in the countryside. Staat refers to a different sense.

Landschaft vs. Landwirtschaft: meanings and usage in German

Landschaft means a landscape, scenery or an area with a particular character. Landwirtschaft means agriculture or farming. A Landschaft may contain farms, but it can also include forests, mountains or towns. The shared Land- does not make the words interchangeable: one describes an area or its appearance, while the other usually describes an economic activity.

At a glance
WordCore meaningTypical contextGrammar
Landschaftlandscape; sceneryan area's appearance or characterdie Landschaft; die Landschaften
Landwirtschaftagriculture; farminggrowing crops and raising livestockdie Landwirtschaft; usually singular

Landschaft

Meaning and usage: Use Landschaft when describing the visible or geographical character of an area. A mountainous, coastal or urban landscape can each be a Landschaft. The word can also name a landscape picture and, figuratively, the overall arrangement of a field such as politics. It does not mean countryside exclusively: the character of the whole area is what matters.

Grammar: Feminine: die Landschaft, plural die Landschaften. Adjectives inflect normally: eine hügelige Landschaft. In einer Landschaft wohnen uses dative for location. Eine Landschaft beschreiben takes the landscape as an accusative object. As with other nouns, capitalization remains necessary inside a sentence.

Die Landschaft verändert sich von der Küste bis zu den Bergen.

The landscape changes from the coast to the mountains.

Das Gemälde zeigt eine winterliche Landschaft.

The painting shows a wintry landscape.

Landwirtschaft

Meaning and usage: Use Landwirtschaft for farming as an activity or sector, including growing crops and raising animals. Expressions such as in der Landwirtschaft arbeiten refer to the field of employment. Organic or regional Landwirtschaft describes a type of agricultural practice. In a separate, less central sense the noun can refer to an individual farm or agricultural operation.

Grammar: Feminine: die Landwirtschaft. Agriculture as an activity or sector normally has no plural. The dictionary also records die Landwirtschaften for individual farming establishments, so an absolute no-plural rule would be misleading. In der Landwirtschaft uses dative; die Landwirtschaft fördern has an accusative object.

Meine Tante arbeitet in der Landwirtschaft.

My aunt works in agriculture.

Die Region fördert eine umweltverträgliche Landwirtschaft.

The region supports environmentally compatible agriculture.

Overlap and context

Agriculture can shape a landscape, so both words may naturally appear in one explanation: Landwirtschaft prägt die Landschaft. This relationship does not turn scenery into a type of farming. In a phrase such as politische Landschaft, the geographical image is metaphorical; Landwirtschaft retains its connection to agricultural activity. Look at what is being described before translating either word as land or countryside.

Common mistakes

  • Do not say schöne Landwirtschaft when you simply admire the scenery; schöne Landschaft is the intended phrase.
  • Do not translate Landwirtschaft as landscape because it starts with Land-.
  • Teach the ordinary singular of agriculture while acknowledging the less common countable farm sense; do not invent Landwirtschafts as a plural.

Memory aid: A Landschaft is what the area looks like. Landwirtschaft is what farmers do. Picture a farm as one part of a landscape, rather than equating the two whole concepts.

Try it

You are describing the view from a train window. Complete: Die ___ ist hier sehr hügelig.

Show the answer

Landschaft

Hilly describes the area's geography. Landwirtschaft would describe farming, not the overall view.

Reise, Fahrt and Flug: which German word describes your trip?

Reise is the broad word for a journey or trip, often considered as a whole. Fahrt commonly describes traveling in a vehicle or a particular ride. Flug describes flying or a flight to a destination. One Reise may include several Fahrten and a Flug. Length is a useful contextual tendency, not a fixed boundary between the words.

At a glance
WordCore meaningTypical contextGrammar
Reisejourney; tripthe overall travel undertakingdie Reise; die Reisen
Fahrtride; journey by vehiclebus, train, car or boat traveldie Fahrt; die Fahrten
Flugflightair travel or flyingder Flug; die Flüge

Reise

Meaning and usage: Use Reise for a travel undertaking to a destination or across a region. It can be for business or pleasure and can use different means of transport. A Reise need not be a holiday, nor must it last a specified number of days.

Grammar: Feminine: die Reise, plural die Reisen. Common combinations include eine Reise machen, auf einer Reise sein and eine Reise nach + destination.

Unsere Reise nach Österreich dauert eine Woche.

Our trip to Austria lasts a week.

Auf der Reise besuchen wir mehrere Städte.

On the trip we visit several cities.

Fahrt

Meaning and usage: Use Fahrt for the act of traveling in a vehicle or for an individual journey or ride. It can be a long train journey, so 'Fahrt means only a short trip' is misleading. Boats and ships can also make a Fahrt.

Grammar: Feminine: die Fahrt, plural die Fahrten. As an uncountable activity in nach drei Stunden Fahrt, it has no plural; individual journeys can be counted. During a ride is während der Fahrt.

Die Fahrt mit dem Nachtzug dauert zehn Stunden.

The journey on the night train takes ten hours.

Während der Fahrt lese ich ein Buch.

I read a book during the journey.

Flug

Meaning and usage: Use Flug for a flight, especially the air-travel leg to a particular destination. It also names flying more generally, including the flight of a bird, so it is not restricted to airline tickets.

Grammar: Masculine: der Flug, plural die Flüge. Genitive des Fluges or des Flugs. Common phrases include einen Flug buchen and ein Flug nach + destination.

Unser Flug nach Wien startet morgen.

Our flight to Vienna leaves tomorrow.

Overlap and context

A trip with a flight and a bus ride is one Reise with different stages. A long Fahrt can itself be described as a Reise when you frame it as a travel undertaking. English 'trip' and 'journey' do not map mechanically to just one German noun; transport and narrative focus help decide.

Common mistakes

  • Use der Flug, but die Fahrt and die Reise.
  • Do not replace Flug with Fahrt when you specifically mean an airline flight.
  • Do not invent a distance or duration cutoff between Reise and Fahrt.

Memory aid: Reise is the trip; Fahrt is traveling by vehicle; Flug takes you through the air.

Try it

Complete: Ich habe einen direkten ___ von Berlin nach Rom gebucht.

Show the answer

Flug

The airline journey is a flight. The whole visit to Rome could instead be described as a Reise.

Karte, Fahrkarte and Ticket: map, card or travel ticket?

Karte is a broad word that can mean card, map, menu or ticket, depending on context. Fahrkarte specifically concerns permission to use public transport. Ticket is a German loanword used for travel and admission tickets, among other contexts. At a station, all three may refer to your travel ticket; at a restaurant or while reading a map, Ticket cannot replace Karte. A compound or the situation often makes the intended meaning clear.

At a glance
WordCore meaningTypical contextGrammar
Kartecard; map; menu; ticketMeaning identified by context or compoundDie Karte; plural die Karten. Common patterns: eine Karte von + dative area, mit Karte bezahlen, Karten für + accusative event. The article stays feminine across these everyday senses.
Fahrkartepublic-transport ticketPermission to travel on a transport serviceDie Fahrkarte; plural die Fahrkarten. Useful phrases: eine Fahrkarte kaufen, eine Fahrkarte nach + destination, eine Fahrkarte für + accusative journey or service.
TicketticketTravel or admission to an eventDas Ticket; plural die Tickets. Common phrases: ein Ticket buchen/kaufen, ein Ticket für + accusative event. Use German capitalization and the neuter article.

Karte

Meaning and usage: Karte can be a postcard, a playing card, a payment card, a map or a shortened ticket word. In a restaurant, die Karte may be the menu; beim Bezahlen, mit Karte means pay by card. Do not assume one physical format: maps and tickets may be digital. Clear compounds include Landkarte, Speisekarte and Eintrittskarte.

Grammar: Die Karte; plural die Karten. Common patterns: eine Karte von + dative area, mit Karte bezahlen, Karten für + accusative event. The article stays feminine across these everyday senses.

Auf der Karte sehe ich einen kleinen See.

On the map, I can see a small lake.

Kann ich mit Karte bezahlen?

Can I pay by card?

Fahrkarte

Meaning and usage: Fahrkarte narrows the meaning to a travel entitlement, especially on public transport. It may specify a route or journey. A Fahrkarte is not an ordinary concert-admission ticket or a geographical map. The compound’s Fahr- element helps you identify its travel purpose.

Grammar: Die Fahrkarte; plural die Fahrkarten. Useful phrases: eine Fahrkarte kaufen, eine Fahrkarte nach + destination, eine Fahrkarte für + accusative journey or service.

Ich kaufe eine Fahrkarte nach Leipzig.

I buy a ticket to Leipzig.

Meine Fahrkarte ist auf dem Handy gespeichert.

My travel ticket is saved on my phone.

Ticket

Meaning and usage: Ticket works for flights, trains and events. It is ordinary German vocabulary despite its English origin. Context can give it other meanings, including a colloquial fine, so check the surrounding sentence. The word is not limited to electronic tickets and does not exclude a paper version.

Grammar: Das Ticket; plural die Tickets. Common phrases: ein Ticket buchen/kaufen, ein Ticket für + accusative event. Use German capitalization and the neuter article.

Wir haben zwei Tickets für das Konzert.

We have two tickets for the concert.

Das Ticket für den Flug ist schon gebucht.

The flight ticket is already booked.

Overlap and context

Eine Fahrkarte, ein Ticket and, in the right station context, eine Karte can identify the same travel document. The article changes with the noun, not with paper versus digital format. Karte stays much broader; asking for die Karte in a restaurant is normal, while asking for ein Ticket suggests admission or transport.

Common mistakes

  • Do not use der Ticket: the everyday German noun is das Ticket.
  • A map is not automatically a Ticket; use Karte or a precise compound such as Landkarte.

Memory aid: Karte needs context; Fahrkarte names travel; Ticket names travel or admission. Picture a map, a train journey and a concert entrance.

Try it

Complete the article and plural: ___ Ticket; zwei ___ .

Show the answer

das; Tickets

Ticket is neuter and forms its plural with -s.
