hinunter
Meaning and usage: Hinunter presents downward movement toward a lower place viewed as there rather than here. It suits going from an upper floor down to a lower one or looking into a valley. It can also describe going along a road or river, where no steep drop is required.
Grammar: Uninflected adverb. With a movement verb it can form a separable compound: hinuntergehen → ich gehe hinunter, bin hinuntergegangen. It does not itself assign a noun case; a separate preposition or construction does that.
Ich stehe im zweiten Stock und gehe jetzt ins Erdgeschoss hinunter.
I am on the second floor and now go down to the ground floor.
herunter
Meaning and usage: Herunter commonly presents downward movement toward the viewpoint: someone upstairs comes down to where you are. It also has broader directional and figurative uses, so the contrast with hinunter is a useful model rather than an absolute location test.
Grammar: Uninflected adverb. Separable compound example: herunterkommen → sie kommt herunter, ist heruntergekommen. Depending on the verb and sense, participle auxiliaries differ; do not assign one auxiliary to herunter itself.
Ich warte im Erdgeschoss. Komm bitte zu mir herunter!
I am waiting on the ground floor. Please come down to me!
unten
Meaning and usage: Unten describes a location below, downstairs or at the bottom. It can locate a person, an object or information further down a page. It does not by itself describe the journey to that location. Nach unten is a separate directional phrase.
Grammar: Uninflected location adverb: unten sein, unten warten. No article or required noun object. Do not confuse it with the preposition unter, which can introduce a noun phrase.
Deine Tasche liegt unten neben der Haustür.
Your bag is downstairs next to the front door.
Overlap and context
A person can go hinunter and then be unten. Another person watching from below may describe the same journey with herunter. In storytelling, the viewpoint can shift, and everyday runter is common for either direction. Do not correct every apparent hin/her mismatch solely by locating the narrator. First check the context, adopted viewpoint and established expression.
Common mistakes
- For a stationary location, use Die Tasche liegt unten, not hinunter as a direct replacement.
- Do not assume herunter always means the speaker is literally downstairs. Context can adopt a viewpoint.
- Unten does not take a noun directly like unter dem Tisch.
Memory aid: Hin: toward there. Her: toward here. Unten: already below. Use this as a viewpoint guide, allowing contextual shifts.
Try it
You describe where someone is, not their movement. Complete: Sie wartet ___.
