Home / Bei vs mit: two meanings of “with” in German

When should I use bei or mit to say “with” in German?

Bei often describes being at or near a person, place or organization, or the circumstances of an activity. Mit often describes company, cooperation, an instrument or an accompanying feature. Both take the dative. Ich bin bei meiner Freundin can mean I am at her place or with her; ich gehe mit ihr describes going together.

bei

Meaning and usage: Bei can locate you at someone’s home, workplace or professional service. It also expresses closeness, involvement or circumstances: beim Lernen, while learning. It is not always a physical address. Ich bleibe bei dir can describe staying with someone, and bei schlechtem Wetter gives a condition.

Grammar: Preposition with dative: bei meiner Freundin, bei dem Arzt. Bei dem contracts to beim. No accusative alternative is introduced merely because the sentence contains movement. Learn verbs that select bei in their own constructions.

Ich arbeite bei einer kleinen Firma in Köln.

I work for a small company in Cologne.

mit

Meaning and usage: Mit introduces a companion, a person you cooperate or interact with, a tool or a means. It also describes accompanying features: ein Zimmer mit Balkon. It does not by itself locate you at someone’s home or identify your employer.

Grammar: Preposition with dative: mit meiner Freundin, mit dem Bus, mit einem Stift. The case remains dative with movement verbs too. In a construction such as mit jemandem sprechen, the verb determines which relationship is being expressed.

Ich fahre mit meiner Freundin mit dem Bus zur Schule.

I travel to school with my friend by bus.

Overlap and context

Ich arbeite bei Anna can mean working at Anna’s business or place; ich arbeite mit Anna means working together with Anna. Sometimes bei and mit both translate as with because English leaves the relationship unspecified. German may clarify location, affiliation, cooperation or accompaniment. Bei mir and mit mir are therefore not opposites called “stationary” and “moving”: either phrase can occur with different types of verbs. A verb’s established construction also matters, so learn the preposition with the action.

Common mistakes

  • Do not change mit to accusative after fahren: mit dem Bus remains dative.
  • For an employer, bei einer Firma is the useful default; mit einer Firma describes cooperation or another specified relation.
  • Bei meiner Freundin does not necessarily tell you that an activity is done together.

Memory aid: Bei: at, near or in the circumstances of. Mit: together with or by means of. Ask what relationship the sentence describes.
