Jemand, niemand, etwas and nichts: indefinite pronouns and case

Use jemand for an unspecified person and niemand for no person; use etwas for an unspecified thing or content and nichts for none. Person forms can mark case, while etwas and nichts stay unchanged. A following adjective used as a noun carries its own ending and capital letter. This guide connects those choices without treating every English “any” or Vietnamese “ai” as one fixed German word.

First choose person or thing, then positive or negative

Jemand wartet vor der Tür introduces a person without naming them. The speaker may know who it is but choose not to specify. Niemand wartet vor der Tür denies that any relevant person is waiting. Neither pronoun specifies the person’s gender. The finite verb is singular: Jemand kommt; Niemand fehlt.

Ich habe etwas gefunden leaves the thing or information unspecified. Ich habe nichts gefunden denies finding any relevant thing. These forms are not plural merely because several possible people or objects are being considered. The relevant group comes from context: Niemand aus unserem Kurs fehlt concerns this course, not all people everywhere.

Choose reference and whether anything is included

  1. Person, unspecified

    Jemand wartet.

At least one relevant person, without naming them.

  2. Person, none

    Niemand wartet.

    No relevant person is waiting.

  3. Thing/content, unspecified

    Ich habe etwas gefunden.

A thing or content is left unspecified.

  4. Thing/content, none

    Ich habe nichts gefunden.

No relevant thing or content was found.

After selecting meaning, check case from the sentence; only some forms show it visibly.

Person forms can show case

Jemand and niemand: singular forms and accepted endingless variants
CaseUnspecified personNo person
Nominativjemandniemand
Akkusativjemanden / jemandniemanden / niemand
Dativjemandem / jemandniemandem / niemand
Genitivjemandesniemandes

Use the marked forms as a clear productive starting point: Ich suche jemanden; Ich helfe jemandem; Ich spreche mit niemandem. Case is selected by the verb or preposition. Endings do not depend on whether a person’s gender is known.

The endingless accusative and dative forms are also standard possibilities; they are not automatically mistakes. Their frequency varies by surrounding construction. Explicit endings often make the role easier to see, especially when the pronoun stands alone. Genitive jemandes and niemandes occur in possessive phrases such as Das ist niemandes Schuld; ordinary conversation often uses an alternative phrasing. There is no plural paradigm to build.

Etwas and nichts stay unchanged

Etwas and nichts do not acquire accusative or dative endings: Ich sehe etwas; Ich rechne mit etwas; Ich rechne mit nichts. A preposition can still govern a case even when the pronoun does not visibly change. Unchanged form is not the absence of grammatical function.

Irgendjemand and irgendetwas can strengthen the idea that no particular choice or identity matters: Frag irgendjemanden aus dem Team. Context determines whether this sounds casual, open-ended or dismissive. In a neutral question Hat jemand angerufen?, English may use “anyone”; a negative answer can use Niemand hat angerufen. Do not map “any” to one German form regardless of sentence meaning.

Write something new and with something good

Ich brauche etwas Gutes and Es gibt nichts Neues contain adjectives used as neuter nouns. Capitalize Gutes and Neues. In nominative and accusative, this pattern uses -es. With dative, the adjective changes: mit etwas Gutem; mit nichts Neuem. The pronoun remains unchanged; the adjective displays the case.

Compare Ich bin etwas müde. Here etwas means “a little” and müde is an ordinary descriptive adjective, so it stays lowercase. In etwas kaltes Wasser, kaltes describes the visible noun Wasser and also stays lowercase. “Always capitalize the next word after etwas” is therefore false. Identify the role before deciding spelling and ending.

One ordinary negative pronoun already negates

Niemand hat etwas gesagt means no one said anything. Ich habe nichts gehört means I heard nothing. Do not add nicht as a second routine negative simply because another language normally uses a negative verb with a negative word. Multiple negative expressions can have special interpretations, but they are not the basic pattern for these meanings.

Distinguish an unspecified person from people in general. Jemand kann mir helfen suggests at least one person who can help; a general statement with man has a different function. Likewise niemand is not a replacement for alle or jeder in every sentence. Keep the intended scope: Nicht jeder hat geantwortet leaves open that some did; Niemand hat geantwortet says none did. The quantity system deserves its own comparison practice.

Check your decisions: eight explained tasks

1. A person is outside, but you do not name them. Complete: __ wartet draußen.

Jemand wartet draußen. Jemand introduces an unspecified person; singular wartet agrees with it.

2. Use a visibly marked accusative: Ich suche __ aus dem Team. (jemand)

jemanden. Suchen takes an accusative object. Endingless jemand is also possible, but this task requests the marked form.

3. Use a visibly marked dative: Ich vertraue __. (niemand)

niemandem. Vertrauen selects dative. Endingless niemand is an accepted variant, not a different case meaning.

4. You found an object, not a person: Ich habe __ gefunden.

etwas. The context selects an unspecified thing. Jemanden would refer to finding a person.

5. Complete the nominalized adjective: Ich brauche etwas gut__.

Ich brauche etwas Gutes. Accusative neuter nominalized adjective: capital initial and ending -es.

6. Complete after mit: Wir beginnen mit etwas Gut__.

Wir beginnen mit etwas Gutem. Mit requires dative; the adjective shows -em while etwas stays unchanged.

7. Correct the ordinary single-negative statement: Niemand hat nicht angerufen. Intended: no one called.

Niemand hat angerufen. The negative pronoun already expresses no one; adding nicht does not give the intended ordinary pattern.

8. Correct capitalization: Ich bin etwas Müde.

Ich bin etwas müde. Here etwas is a degree modifier meaning a little. Müde is not being used as a noun.

Write an accurate update with limited information

Write six sentences about arranging a study meeting. Mention an unnamed person, an unnamed thing, help from someone in dative, an action nobody performed, something new and a dative phrase with a nominalized adjective. Keep it clear what you know and what you simply leave unspecified. Change one positive sentence into a negative and check whether its meaning becomes no person or no thing. Read the update aloud; do not let grammar make a stronger claim than your information supports.

Use the rule in a wider context

For general man and spelling, see man and Mann. For scope differences such as each, all and restriction, use quantity and restriction. The adjective-ending guide supports the endings in etwas Gutem.

Questions about this topic

Is ich sehe jemand automatically wrong?

No. Endingless jemand is an accepted accusative variant. Ich sehe jemanden makes the case explicit and is a useful learner model.

Does etwas become etwem in dative?

No. Etwas remains unchanged. A following nominalized adjective can show dative, as in mit etwas Neuem.
