Es, das and dies in German: reference, placeholders and es gibt

Use es to continue a neuter noun or as part of a construction; use das or dies to point to something or summarize an idea. The important difference is function. A front-field placeholder disappears when another phrase moves to the front, whereas the es in Heute regnet es and Hier gibt es einen Park remains. This guide gives you a test for each case.

Ask what es is doing

The spelling alone does not tell you whether es means “it”. Ask three questions: does it refer to a noun or a whole idea; does the verb require it; or does it merely occupy the first position? This separates reference from sentence structure. You cannot replace every es with das, and you cannot delete every es after moving a time expression to the front.

Das Fenster ist neu. Es lässt sich leicht öffnen. Here es continues the neuter noun Fenster. With a masculine or feminine noun, choose the matching personal pronoun instead. The noun’s grammatical gender matters, even for objects.

Three movement tests

  1. Placeholder: remove

Es warten Gäste. → Draußen warten Gäste.

Another constituent takes the front field.

  2. Weather: retain

Es regnet. → Heute regnet es.

Es belongs to the weather expression.

  3. Existence: retain

Es gibt Brot. → Hier gibt es Brot.

    The construction still needs es.

Test the construction, not just the position of es.

Five functions, five tests

A diagnostic for es
FunctionOriginal exampleTest
Noun referenceDas Paket ist da. Es liegt im Flur.Which thing? The package.
Formal esHeute schneit es.No object is meant; schneien requires es.
Front-field placeholderEs warten drei Gäste.Three guests are the subject; another fronted phrase removes es.
Anticipatory correlateIch finde es gut, dass du fragst. What is good? The following clause.
ExistenceHier gibt es einen Aufzug.es gibt + accusative; es stays.

Use the tests together. A sentence-initial es is not necessarily a placeholder: in Es schneit it belongs to the weather construction. Position is a clue, not a definition.

Es for a thing; das or dies for an idea

Die Gruppe hat den Termin verschoben. Das überrascht mich. Das points back to the decision or event, not to a particular neuter noun. Dies can do the same and often sounds more written or explicitly demonstrative. Es can also refer to a previously mentioned situation in suitable constructions, so this is not a ban on proposition-reference es.

Ich weiß es. / Ich weiß das. Both can refer to known information. Das more readily points out or contrasts that information; es is often a lighter continuation. Do not expect one translation to determine the choice. In Das neue Fenster, by contrast, das is an article inside a noun phrase, not an independent reference word.

Move a phrase and see what survives

Es warten drei Gäste vor der Tür. → Vor der Tür warten drei Gäste. The plural verb agrees with drei Gäste. Es only fills the otherwise empty front field and disappears when vor der Tür occupies that field. Never keep it as a second subject: “Vor der Tür warten es drei Gäste” is not this construction.

Es regnet heute. → Heute regnet es. Es gibt hier zwei Ausgänge. → Hier gibt es zwei Ausgänge. In both pairs es remains because it belongs to the construction. For a correlate, check the governing expression separately: Ich finde es sinnvoll, früher zu beginnen needs es in this pattern. Other expressions allow different variants, such as Es ist schön, dich zu sehen and Dich zu sehen ist schön. Do not turn these into a universal deletion rule.

Build es gibt with the accusative

Existence across time
TimeExampleWhat to notice
PresentIm Haus gibt es einen Keller und zwei Balkone.gibt stays singular; einen Keller is accusative.
PastFrüher gab es hier einen Laden. The verb changes tense: gab.
PerfectEs hat mehrere Beschwerden gegeben.hat + gegeben; the plural object does not control agreement.
FutureBald wird es mehr Termine geben.wird + geben; es remains the subject.

Hier ist ein Park is also grammatical: it locates or identifies a park. Hier gibt es einen Park presents its existence or availability. Choose by the message, not by a rule that only es gibt can introduce a place. For weather vocabulary, continue with the weather guide.

Eight decisions with reasons

1. Refer to das Ticket: “___ liegt auf dem Tisch.”

Es liegt auf dem Tisch. The neuter noun supplies the reference.

2. Summarize the event: “Lea hat abgesagt. ___ ist schade.” Choose a demonstrative.

Das ist schade. Dies is possible, more formal. The reference is the cancellation.

3. Front heute: “Es schneit heute.”

Heute schneit es. The weather es is retained.

4. Front im Hof: “Es spielen zwei Kinder im Hof.”

Im Hof spielen zwei Kinder. Placeholder es disappears; Kinder controls plural spielen.

5. Complete: “Hier gibt es ___ kleinen Supermarkt.”

einen: es gibt takes an accusative noun phrase.

6. Correct “In der Straße geben es viele Cafés.”

In der Straße gibt es viele Cafés. Plural Cafés is the object, not the subject.

7. Past existence: “Früher ___ es hier eine Schule.”

gab: Früher gab es hier eine Schule. The tense changes, not the construction’s case.

8. Which es points ahead in “Ich finde es wichtig, dass alle mitreden”?

A correlate: the following dass-clause states what the speaker finds important.

Describe a building, then explain a decision

Write five connected sentences for a new colleague: introduce two facilities with es gibt, describe today’s weather, say where two visitors are waiting using a front-field placeholder, then front the location and remove that placeholder. Finish with Ich finde es hilfreich, dass … about a workplace arrangement. Check every es by naming its function.

For the separate lexical contrast between “give”, “take” and “allow”, use give, take, keep and allow.

Questions about this topic

Does es always mean it?

No. It can be referential, formal, anticipatory or a front-field placeholder. The construction es gibt has its own fixed es.

Why not es geben for several things?

In the present-tense existence construction, es is the subject and gibt is singular. The things introduced are accusative objects.
