Use a three-question map before choosing a bin
German household sorting commonly separates paper, glass packaging, other packaging, organic waste and residual waste. The exact containers, accepted items and collection arrangements depend on the local service. Use this guide to understand the language; use your municipality’s current instructions for an actual item.
Object → label → local answer
- Name the whole object
An item name is more precise than “plastic”.
- Joghurtbecher
- Trinkglas
- Batterie
- Read the accepted category
Check restrictions as well as the heading.
- Verpackung
- Papier
- Bioabfall
- Confirm locally
Abfall-ABC
Search for the actual item in the municipal guidance.
Similar material can have different disposal routes. Bin colours alone are not an answer.
A yoghurt pot and a broken plastic toy can contain similar material but have different disposal routes. A collection for lightweight packaging and a broader Wertstofftonne are not necessarily the same service. The label and the accepted-item list matter more than a general memory of a yellow lid.
Understand the label before memorising a colour
| German label | What it points to | What still needs checking |
|---|---|---|
| Restmüll | Residual household waste | Whether a separate collection exists for the item |
| Papier / Pappe | Paper and cardboard | Coatings, heavy contamination and other exclusions |
| Bioabfall / Biotonne | Organic-waste collection | Which scraps and collection bags are accepted locally |
| Gelbe Tonne / Gelber Sack | A collection commonly associated with lightweight packaging | The actual local accepted packaging list |
| Wertstofftonne | A recyclable-material collection | Whether specified non-packaging items are accepted too |
| Altglas / Glascontainer | Usually glass-packaging collection | Deposit status, glass colour and exclusions such as drinking glasses |
| Recyclinghof / Wertstoffhof | A collection facility | Accepted items, conditions and opening times |
Die Tonne is a bin; der Behälter is a container. Die Abfuhr means collection, not the waste itself. Leerung refers to emptying a container. A notice about a changed collection day therefore answers a different question from an accepted-material list.
Hausmüll can refer broadly to household waste, not only residual waste. On a particular container, read the full label and accepted-item instructions rather than treating the two words as exact synonyms.
Separate material, packaging and deposit questions
Kunststoff means plastic, whereas Verpackung describes an object’s purpose as packaging. The words do not mean the same thing. Eine Verpackung aus Kunststoff is plastic packaging; ein Gegenstand aus Kunststoff could be many other objects. Do not reduce a local instruction about packaging to “all plastic”.
Likewise, Glas is a material, but a bottle, a drinking glass and a mirror are different object types. Name the actual object in a lookup. For bottles and cans, first check whether a deposit return is relevant. The Pfand guide explains deposit returns and receipts; this household guide does not replace that process.
Batteries and electrical devices have separate collection routes. They are not a reason to choose the residual bin by default. When a category is unclear, look up the specific item rather than treating a recycling facility as a place that accepts everything under every condition.
Find the right local Abfall-ABC entry
An Abfall-ABC is an item lookup published by a waste service. Search your municipality or provider name together with that term. The BSR Abfall-ABC is one example for Berlin households; it is not the rulebook for another city.
- Enter a concrete German noun, for example Trinkglas, rather than only Glas.
- Read the result for the object and its condition, including any exclusions.
- Check the specified collection point and relevant acceptance conditions.
- If the entry does not match, ask Gilt dieser Hinweis auch für einen kaputten Gegenstand?
For a building-specific issue, ask Welche Tonne gehört zu unserem Haus? For an uncertain material, ask Ist das eine Verpackung oder gehört es in eine andere Sammlung? These are requests for clarification, not claims that a neighbour must know every technical rule.
Read a fictional notice without generalising its rules
The following text is an invented comprehension task. It does not state the real sorting rules for your home:
Hinweis für Haus A: Stellen Sie Papier und Pappe bitte ohne Plastiktüte in den dafür beschrifteten Behälter. Die Liste an der Kellertür erklärt, welche Verpackungen wir hier sammeln. Bei unklaren Gegenständen nutzen Sie bitte das Abfall-ABC unseres örtlichen Entsorgers. Die nächste Leerung des Restmüllbehälters steht im Abfuhrkalender. Fragen zum Standort der Tonnen beantwortet die Hausverwaltung.
Separate three sources of information: the building’s list concerns packaging; the local lookup concerns uncertain items; the calendar concerns collection. Dafür beschriftet means labelled for that purpose. It does not name a colour. Ohne Plastiktüte describes the instruction in this exercise, not a national statement about every collection bag.
Eight checks: choose the right information, not a guessed rule
Does Kunststoff mean the same as Verpackung?
Show answer and explanation
No: one is a material, the other a packaging function.
A non-packaging object can be plastic; material alone does not settle its local route.
Which container does the exercise specify for paper?
Show answer and explanation
The container labelled for paper and cardboard.
The text identifies a purpose, not a universal bin colour.
Where does the fictional notice send a reader with an uncertain object?
Show answer and explanation
To the local provider’s Abfall-ABC.
It does not tell the reader to guess from the packaging list.
Which source answers the next residual-bin collection date?
Show answer and explanation
Der Abfuhrkalender.
A calendar gives collection timing; it does not replace an accepted-item list.
Is the building manager named as the source for bin location?
Show answer and explanation
Yes.
The final sentence assigns that particular question to the Hausverwaltung.
Can a Berlin lookup be applied automatically to another city?
Show answer and explanation
No.
The responsible service and its accepted-item conditions can differ.
Ask where to dispose of a broken drinking glass.
Show answer and explanation
Wo entsorge ich hier ein kaputtes Trinkglas?
The object-specific noun helps distinguish it from a glass bottle or mirror.
Does a label about packaging prove that every plastic toy is accepted?
Show answer and explanation
No.
A toy is not automatically packaging. Check whether the local collection explicitly accepts that object.
Turn one uncertainty into a useful question
Pick one unfamiliar household item. Write its German name, the category you first considered and the local instruction you found. If the instruction does not fit, write a precise follow-up: In der Liste steht Verpackung. Gilt das auch für diesen Gegenstand? The useful result is a confirmed local answer, not a memorised colour chart.

Questions about this topic
Are German bin colours the same everywhere?
No. Container arrangements, labels and accepted items can differ locally. Read the label and the current guidance from the responsible waste service.
Does all plastic belong in the yellow bin?
No. Plastic is a material; lightweight-packaging collection is based on packaging and local rules. A broader Wertstofftonne may accept specified additional objects.
What is an Abfall-ABC?
It is a waste-service lookup for individual items. Search the concrete object and read its disposal and acceptance information for your locality.
Is a Pfand bottle ordinary glass waste?
Check its deposit-return status first. The Pfand guide explains that separate return process; do not assume every bottle belongs in a glass container.
