A1 German Small Talk with Neighbours

Try three A1 German neighbour dialogues, repair phrases and five speaking tasks with answers. Practise greetings, weather and asking for help.

For A1 German small talk with neighbours, start with a greeting, one short piece of information and a simple reply. Practise introducing yourself, making a brief weather comment and asking where something is. The three original dialogues below also include asking again and ending the exchange politely.

A short exchange is enough

You do not need a long conversation every time you meet someone in your building. Choose a moment when the other person seems willing to talk. A greeting and one practical question can be enough; if they are in a hurry, keep it brief.

These are beginner practice examples, not an official A1 assessment or a script that every German neighbour expects. People and buildings differ. You can use an invented name and floor while practising, and adapt the details before a real exchange.

Dialogue 1: introduce yourself in the hallway

Keep Ich bin … and Ich wohne … as two small messages. If the floor phrase is new, begin with “Ich wohne hier” and add the detail later. The dialogue uses an invented name; you do not need to share personal details beyond what you want to say.

Dialogue 1: introduce yourself in the hallway
RoleGerman lineMeaning
YouGuten Morgen. Ich bin Lea. Ich wohne jetzt im zweiten Stock.Good morning. I am Lea. I now live on the second floor.
NeighbourGuten Morgen, ich bin Berger. Herzlich willkommen!Good morning, I am Berger. A warm welcome!
YouDanke. Einen schönen Tag noch!Thank you. Have a nice day!

Dialogue 2: make a brief weather comment and leave

The goal is a short shared moment, not a weather report. If it is warm, use “Heute ist es warm.” If you do not expect to meet again soon, “Einen schönen Tag noch” is another useful ending. Use the weather you actually want to describe; the example is not a current forecast.

Dialogue 2: make a brief weather comment and leave
RoleGerman lineMeaning
YouHeute ist es kalt.It is cold today.
NeighbourJa, sehr kalt.Yes, very cold.
YouIch muss jetzt zur Arbeit. Bis später!I have to go to work now. See you later!

Dialogue 3: ask for a location and request repetition

Listen for the location instead of preparing your next sentence too early. If only one part is unclear, check it: “Links?” A letterbox location in this fictional building is a practice detail, not guidance for every apartment building.

Dialogue 3: ask for a location and request repetition
RoleGerman lineMeaning
YouEntschuldigung, wo sind die Briefkästen?Excuse me, where are the letterboxes?
NeighbourLinks, neben der Tür.On the left, next to the door.
YouKönnen Sie das bitte wiederholen?Could you repeat that, please?
NeighbourLinks, neben der Tür.On the left, next to the door.
YouDanke!Thank you!

Choose Sie or du and keep one useful repair phrase

The help dialogue uses the polite Sie form. If you already use du with this person, the request becomes “Kannst du das bitte wiederholen?” Follow the way you and the other person address each other; this guide does not set a universal rule for all neighbours.

Useful repair phrases include “Noch einmal, bitte” and “Langsam, bitte”. You can say “Ich lerne Deutsch” to explain that you are learning. Practise the repair phrase before you need it, so the conversation can continue even when a word is missing.

Choose Sie or du and keep one useful repair phrase
PurposeGerman phraseMeaning
Ask againNoch einmal, bitte.Once again, please.
Ask for a slower paceLangsam, bitte.Slowly, please.
Explain your situationIch lerne Deutsch.I am learning German.
End politelyEinen schönen Tag noch!Have a nice day!

Five small speaking tasks with answer checks

  1. Introduce yourself with an invented name. Say that you live here.

Name: Samira · information: live here

    Show one possible answer

Guten Tag. Ich bin Samira. Ich wohne hier.

Two short statements are enough. Change Samira to a name you choose and try without reading.

  2. It is warm today. Change the weather comment.

Heute ist es kalt. → warm

    Show one possible answer

    Heute ist es warm.

Only the adjective changes. Then add a short closing phrase rather than forcing a longer conversation.

  3. You did not understand the location. Ask politely for repetition using Sie.

    Links, neben der Tür.

    Show one possible answer

    Können Sie das bitte wiederholen?

You ask for the information you missed. “Noch einmal, bitte” is a shorter alternative.

  4. You are leaving for work. Give the reason and say goodbye.

go to work now · see you later

    Show one possible answer

Ich muss jetzt zur Arbeit. Bis später!

This is a useful closing, not a requirement to explain why you are leaving.

  5. You and your neighbour use du. Adapt the request.

    Können Sie das bitte wiederholen?

    Show one possible answer

    Kannst du das bitte wiederholen?

Both the address form and the conjugated verb change. Practise the entire request so you do not mix Sie with kannst.

Try a small real exchange, then choose what to practise

Before meeting someone, choose one opening and one way to ask again. After the exchange, note the useful phrase you could say and the information you did not catch. You do not need to record the other person or turn a brief greeting into a test.

If you can remember the sentence but struggle to pronounce a word, take that word into listening and pronunciation practice. If you can pronounce it but cannot retrieve it, cover the written sentence and practise from the situation. This is a choice of task, not a diagnosis of your level.
