Telling time in German: formal times, halb and viertel

In German, halb acht means 7:30: halfway towards eight. A precise 24-hour form such as neunzehn Uhr dreißig means 19:30. Learn both systems and confirm the part of the day when needed.

Ask for the time, then choose a clear form

Ask Wie spät ist es? or Wie viel Uhr ist es?. A reply can begin Es ist …. For a precise 24-hour reading, say the hour, Uhr, then the minutes: Es ist vierzehn Uhr zwanzig. At a whole hour you do not need to add zero minutes: Es ist vierzehn Uhr. This system is useful for reading a displayed time or making an otherwise ambiguous time clear.

Everyday conversation often uses a twelve-hour expression instead. Halb acht alone could refer to morning or evening. Add the context when necessary: halb acht morgens or halb acht abends. The 24-hour system is not forbidden in conversation, and everyday phrases are not a separate clock. They are alternative ways to describe the same time.

Compare the clock with the spoken expression

Read each row in both directions: turn the display into a phrase, then cover the first column and recover the time. The everyday alternatives are examples, not the only possible wording. Where the table omits the part of the day, its displayed morning time supplies the context.

One clock time, two ways to say it

13:00dreizehn Uhrein Uhr nachmittags
14:20vierzehn Uhr zwanzigzwanzig nach zwei nachmittags
19:30neunzehn Uhr dreißighalb acht abends

Before Uhr, one is ein: ein Uhr. A short answer without Uhr can be eins. In a direct minutes-after-the-hour form, keep the word order Stunde – Uhr – Minuten; do not place Uhr after the minutes. You can hear zero made explicit in some careful readings, but you do not need to copy the leading zero of a display into every spoken answer.

Build halb, nach and vor from a reference hour

Nach counts minutes after an hour: zehn nach sieben is 7:10. Vor counts backwards from the following hour: zehn vor acht is 7:50. Viertel nach sieben is 7:15; Viertel vor acht is 7:45. In these short everyday expressions, do not add Uhr at the end.

For halb, name the hour you are approaching. At 7:30 you are halfway towards eight, so say halb acht. At 9:30, say halb zehn. A reliable check is to write the named hour, then move back thirty minutes. Do not translate English “half past seven” word for word. Longer local patterns such as fünf vor halb acht also occur; learn the basic half-hour before adding those combinations.

Recognise regional quarter-hour expressions

In some communities, you will hear viertel acht for 7:15 and drei viertel acht for 7:45. These expressions count how much of the hour leading to eight has passed. They are regionally distributed across the German-speaking area; it is inaccurate to treat every speaker in a whole country as using the same system.

The university Atlas zur deutschen Alltagssprache documents this variation. You do not need to use every regional form yourself. Learn to recognise it, and confirm an unfamiliar time with numbers: Meinen Sie sieben Uhr fünfzehn?. For a practical arrangement, the shared understood time matters more than proving which expression is normal in your own region.

Use um for a starting time

Es ist acht Uhr tells the current time. Der Film beginnt um acht Uhr gives a starting point. Ask Um wie viel Uhr beginnt der Film? and answer Um acht Uhr. With a half-hour phrase, the same pattern is um halb acht. Do not add an extra Uhr after halb acht.

Distinguish clock time from duration: um zwei Uhr means at two o’clock; zwei Stunden means two hours. This short contrast helps you understand the task, but a full appointment-call script or numerical-date guide belongs elsewhere. If a time matters, also check the day and the part of the day rather than relying only on a bare number.

Eight clock-time tasks

Try the conversion or sentence before opening its answer. Unless stated otherwise, these exercises use a morning time and ask for one clear possible form. They are original language tasks, not an official listening test.

  1. What time is halb acht in the morning?

    Show answer and reason

07:30. The named hour is eight, and halb moves back thirty minutes.

  2. Say 14:20 using a 24-hour reading.

    Show answer and reason

vierzehn Uhr zwanzig. The hour comes before Uhr and the minutes follow it.

  3. Give a common everyday expression for 07:45.

    Show answer and reason

Viertel vor acht. A quarter of an hour remains before eight.

  4. Convert zehn nach neun into a clock display.

    Show answer and reason

09:10. Nach adds ten minutes to nine.

  5. Complete: Der Film beginnt ___ halb acht..

    Show answer and reason

um. This is the film’s starting time, not a statement of the current time.

  6. Choose ein or eins: Es ist ___ Uhr..

    Show answer and reason

ein Uhr. Before Uhr, use ein; a short answer without Uhr can be eins.

  7. Someone uses the regional expression viertel acht. Does it mean 07:15 or 08:15?

    Show answer and reason

07:15 in that regional system. Confirm with sieben Uhr fünfzehn if the expression is unfamiliar.

  8. Make halb acht clearly mean 19:30.

    Show answer and reason

halb acht abends or neunzehn Uhr dreißig. Both remove the morning/evening uncertainty.

Check meaning before adding speed

Draw four clock faces or write four displays. Give a direct reading for each, then an everyday alternative where you know one. Later, mix the order so the exercise is not just a sequence of increasing times. Check three things separately: the hour, the minutes and whether morning/evening was clear. A correct written conversion does not by itself show how well you understand a fast spoken announcement.

For listening with actual recordings, try the existing A2–B1 listening dialogues. Use conversation scenarios when you want to place a time inside a complete exchange. The time-word comparisons explain other time relationships without replacing this clock-time lesson.

Questions about this topic

Does halb acht mean 8:30?

No. It means 7:30, halfway towards eight. At 8:30, the corresponding expression is halb neun.

Does everyone say viertel acht for 7:15?

No. That form is regional. Viertel nach sieben is another expression for the same time. Ask for a numerical confirmation if a regional form is unfamiliar.

Can I use a 24-hour form when speaking?

Yes. A form such as neunzehn Uhr dreißig can make the time precise. Everyday twelve-hour expressions are also common; add the part of the day when it is unclear.
