Beziehung, Verhältnis and Verbindung: relationship or connection?

Beziehung often names a relationship between people or things, including a romantic relationship. Verhältnis can describe how people relate to one another, but it also means a ratio or relation between quantities. Verbindung emphasizes a connection, link or contact, including transport and communication links. These words overlap; the relevant kind of relationship guides the choice.

Beziehung

Meaning and usage: Use Beziehung for interpersonal relationships or a connection between concepts. Eine Beziehung without further context often suggests a romantic partnership. The plural may describe professional or diplomatic relations.

Grammar: Feminine: die Beziehung, plural die Beziehungen. Common phrases include eine Beziehung zu + dative and die Beziehung zwischen things or people; static zwischen takes dative.

Sie hat eine enge Beziehung zu ihrer Schwester.

She has a close relationship with her sister.

Wir untersuchen die Beziehung zwischen Sprache und Denken.

We examine the relationship between language and thought.

Verhältnis

Meaning and usage: It describes the way someone relates to someone else, and also proportions between quantities. The plural Verhältnisse can refer to circumstances or living conditions. In romantic contexts, ein Verhältnis can suggest an affair rather than simply a committed partnership.

Grammar: Neuter: das Verhältnis, plural die Verhältnisse. Genitive: des Verhältnisses. Common constructions include ein Verhältnis zu + dative and im Verhältnis zu.

Ich habe ein gutes Verhältnis zu meiner Nachbarin.

I have a good relationship with my neighbor.

Das Verhältnis von Wasser zu Saft beträgt zwei zu eins.

The ratio of water to juice is two to one.

Verbindung

Meaning and usage: Use it for a link that enables movement or communication, for contact between people, or for a connection between events. It does not inherently specify friendship or romance.

Grammar: Feminine: die Verbindung, plural die Verbindungen. Common patterns include mit jemandem in Verbindung stehen and eine Verbindung zu + dative.

Es gibt eine direkte Verbindung nach Leipzig.

There is a direct connection to Leipzig.

Wir bleiben miteinander in Verbindung.

We will stay in touch.

Overlap and context

Eine gute Beziehung zu jemandem and ein gutes Verhältnis zu jemandem can both describe positive personal relations. Eine Verbindung may emphasize contact or the link itself. Be especially careful with romantic contexts: eine Beziehung and ein Verhältnis can suggest different situations. No universal 'emotional versus technical' division explains every usage.

Common mistakes

  • Use das Verhältnis, not die Verhältnis.
  • A train connection is usually a Verbindung, not a Beziehung.
  • Do not replace every romantic Beziehung with Verhältnis without checking the implication.

Memory aid: Beziehung relates; Verhältnis also compares; Verbindung connects.

Try it

Which fits a direct rail connection: eine direkte ___ nach Dresden?

Show the answer

Verbindung

The noun identifies a transport link. Verhältnis would instead suggest a relation or ratio.

Möglichkeit, Gelegenheit and Chance: possibility or opportunity?

Möglichkeit is the broad word for a possibility, option or available way to do something. Gelegenheit highlights circumstances or a moment that let you act. Chance can mean a favourable opportunity or a prospect of success. The words overlap: the same invitation may give you a Möglichkeit, Gelegenheit or Chance to practise German. Their difference is usually the viewpoint you emphasize, not a strict English-to-German translation rule.

At a glance
WordCore meaningTypical contextGrammar
Möglichkeitpossibility; optionAvailable choices and feasible actionsDie Möglichkeit; plural die Möglichkeiten. Often Möglichkeit, etwas zu tun, Möglichkeit zu + dative, or Möglichkeit, dass … . Feasibility as an abstract concept is often singular.
Gelegenheitopportunity; occasionA suitable moment or circumstancesDie Gelegenheit; plural die Gelegenheiten. Useful patterns: Gelegenheit, etwas zu tun; Gelegenheit zu + dative; bei Gelegenheit.
Chancechance; prospect of successAn opening or likelihood of achieving somethingDie Chance; plural die Chancen. Common patterns include eine Chance auf + accusative and eine Chance, etwas zu tun.

Möglichkeit

Meaning and usage: Möglichkeit can name an option among several, or simply the fact that something is possible. It does not need to be favourable: the possibility of an error is still a Möglichkeit. It can also mean opportunity, so using it for a beneficial opening is not wrong. In the plural, finanzielle Möglichkeiten refers to financial means.

Grammar: Die Möglichkeit; plural die Möglichkeiten. Often Möglichkeit, etwas zu tun, Möglichkeit zu + dative, or Möglichkeit, dass … . Feasibility as an abstract concept is often singular.

Wir haben zwei Möglichkeiten: den Bus nehmen oder zu Fuß gehen.

We have two options: take the bus or walk.

Es besteht die Möglichkeit, dass der Zug später ankommt.

There is a possibility that the train will arrive later.

Gelegenheit

Meaning and usage: Gelegenheit often focuses on a situation that allows you to do something. It may be a chance encounter, an available moment or an occasion such as a celebration. Bei Gelegenheit means when an opportunity arises or at some point, rather than at a precisely booked appointment.

Grammar: Die Gelegenheit; plural die Gelegenheiten. Useful patterns: Gelegenheit, etwas zu tun; Gelegenheit zu + dative; bei Gelegenheit.

Nach dem Vortrag hatte ich Gelegenheit, eine Frage zu stellen.

After the talk, I had an opportunity to ask a question.

Ich bringe dir das Buch bei Gelegenheit vorbei.

I will bring the book round when I get a chance.

Chance

Meaning and usage: Chance often connects an opening to a desired result. It can describe your chances of winning or being selected, not only the opportunity to try. Gute Chancen does not promise success. The word’s opportunity sense overlaps with Gelegenheit and Möglichkeit.

Grammar: Die Chance; plural die Chancen. Common patterns include eine Chance auf + accusative and eine Chance, etwas zu tun.

Mit mehr Übung hast du gute Chancen auf einen Platz im Team.

With more practice, you have good chances of a place on the team.

Sie nutzt die Chance, mit der Autorin zu sprechen.

She takes the opportunity to speak with the author.

Overlap and context

If you want to stress available alternatives, Möglichkeiten is a natural choice. If the right moment is the point, Gelegenheit helps. If success or a valuable opening matters, Chance fits. These are preferences, not barriers: dictionary meanings explicitly overlap. In particular, Chance does not mean certainty and Möglichkeit does not mean purely theoretical.

Common mistakes

  • Do not assume opportunity must always be Gelegenheit: Möglichkeit and Chance may both fit.
  • Do not confuse eine Chance haben with guaranteed success.

Memory aid: Option, occasion, outcome: ask what you want to emphasize. The three prompts guide your choice without pretending the meanings never overlap.

Try it

Which is best for several alternative ways to solve a problem: verschiedene ___?

Show the answer

Möglichkeiten

The focus is a set of possible methods or options, rather than one suitable moment.

Sources for meaning and usage

Ziel, Zweck and Absicht: goal, purpose and intention

Ziel focuses on a result or destination you aim to reach. Zweck focuses on what something is for or what an action is meant to achieve. Absicht focuses on someone’s intention. The words overlap when a planned action has a desired result, but they are not interchangeable in every fixed expression.

At a glance
WordCore meaningTypical contextGrammar
Zielgoal; destination; targeta result to reachdas Ziel; plural Ziele
Zweckpurpose; intended usewhy something is done or usedder Zweck; plural Zwecke
Absichtintentionwhat someone means to dodie Absicht; plural Absichten

Ziel

Meaning and usage: Ziel can be a concrete destination, a target you aim at or an intended result. It suits a study objective, project outcome or sporting goal. Ask “What do I want to reach?” rather than assuming it always concerns a physical place.

Grammar: Das Ziel; genitive des Ziels or Zieles; plural die Ziele. Ein Ziel erreichen; sich ein Ziel setzen has a dative reflexive pronoun. Common phrases include mit dem Ziel, … zu and zum Ziel haben.

Mein Ziel ist, im nächsten Jahr die B1-Prüfung zu bestehen.

My goal is to pass the B1 exam next year.

Zweck

Meaning and usage: Zweck concerns an intended function or the result an action is designed to serve. It can describe a tool’s use, the reason for a meeting or a charitable purpose. A thing can have a Zweck even though it has no intentions of its own.

Grammar: Der Zweck; genitive des Zwecks or Zweckes; plural die Zwecke. Einem Zweck dienen uses a dative object; zum Zweck or zu diesem Zweck uses zu + dative.

Der Zweck dieser Übung ist, die Verbformen zu wiederholen.

The purpose of this exercise is to review the verb forms.

Absicht

Meaning and usage: Absicht is a person’s intention or plan. It does not mean the intended action actually happens. Mit Absicht means deliberately or on purpose, while ohne Absicht means without intending it. These expressions concern intention rather than a measurable goal.

Grammar: Die Absicht; genitive der Absicht; plural die Absichten. Die Absicht haben, … zu; mit/ohne Absicht. Mit takes dative and ohne accusative, though this bare-noun phrase does not show the case ending.

Ich hatte die Absicht, früher anzurufen, aber ich war noch im Meeting.

I intended to call earlier, but I was still in the meeting.

Overlap and context

Das Ziel der Besprechung and der Zweck der Besprechung may both name an intended outcome. Ziel foregrounds the destination or result; Zweck foregrounds what the meeting serves. Die Absicht records the intention behind an action, including an intention that is never fulfilled. These perspectives are useful, but not an absolute three-part classification.

Common mistakes

  • Do not translate “on purpose” as mit Ziel. The normal expression is mit Absicht.
  • A goal is das Ziel, not der Ziel.
  • Having an Absicht does not establish that someone completed the action.

Memory aid: Ziel: where you want to arrive. Zweck: what it serves. Absicht: what you intend.

Try it

Complete: Das habe ich nicht mit ___ gemacht.

Show the answer

Absicht

Mit Absicht means deliberately or on purpose.

Sources for meaning and usage

Grund vs. Ursache vs. Anlass: reason, cause, or occasion?

Grund is a broad reason or explanation. Ursache emphasizes what brings about an event or condition. Anlass is the prompt, occasion, or event that gives someone a reason to act. Their meanings overlap; the distinction often depends on whether you are explaining, investigating causation, or identifying an occasion.

At a glance
WordCore meaningTypical contextGrammar
Grundreason; explanation or motivedecisions; explanations; justificationder Grund; plural Gründe; für + accusative
Ursachecauseinvestigating problems, events, or conditionsdie Ursache; plural Ursachen; für + accusative
Anlassprompt; occasionan opportunity to act; a particular eventder Anlass; plural Anlässe; für + accusative or zu + dative

Grund

Meaning and usage: Grund can explain a person's choice or why something happened. It is a flexible everyday word, useful when asking why a meeting was canceled or why someone moved. It also has unrelated physical meanings such as ground and bottom, so context remains important.

Grammar: Masculine: der Grund, genitive des Grundes or Grunds, plural die Gründe. In this lesson's reason sense, plural is normal. Common combinations are der Grund für + accusative, aus diesem Grund, and aus persönlichen Gründen.

Der Grund für meinen Umzug ist meine neue Stelle.

The reason for my move is my new position.

Ursache

Meaning and usage: Ursache directs attention to what causes something. It suits an investigation into a technical fault, an accident, or a recurring problem. It can also concern human behavior; it is not restricted to physical or scientific causes.

Grammar: Feminine: die Ursache, genitive der Ursache, plural die Ursachen. Use die Ursache des Problems or die Ursache für + accusative. Cause and effect are often paired as Ursache und Wirkung.

Ein defektes Kabel war die Ursache für den Ausfall.

A faulty cable was the cause of the outage.

Anlass

Meaning and usage: Anlass can be what prompts an action, or the occasion on which something happens. A birthday may be an Anlass for a celebration; a complaint may provide Anlass to examine a procedure. It does not always mean a superficial or unimportant trigger.

Grammar: Masculine: der Anlass, genitive des Anlasses, plural die Anlässe. Common patterns include Anlass für + accusative, Anlass zu + dative, and jemandem Anlass geben, etwas zu tun. Aus Anlass introduces an occasion, especially in formal writing.

Ihr Besuch war der Anlass für unser gemeinsames Abendessen.

Her visit was the occasion for our dinner together.

Overlap and context

A complaint can be the Anlass for an inspection, while defective equipment is the Ursache of the problem and safety is the Grund for changing the procedure. That example separates the roles neatly, but real usage is less rigid. Grund can describe a cause, and Anlass can mean a reason. Ask which aspect the sentence foregrounds.

Common mistakes

  • Do not impose the rule “Grund is always subjective; Ursache is always objective.”
  • Do not replace Anlass with Ursache when you mean a festive occasion.
  • Remember the umlaut in Gründe and Anlässe; Ursachen does not gain one.

Memory aid: Grund answers why; Ursache looks for what caused it; Anlass identifies what prompted it or the occasion.

Try it

Which word best fits a special occasion: Ihr Geburtstag ist ein besonderer ___?

Show the answer

Anlass

The birthday is an occasion, rather than an investigated cause or an explanation for a particular decision.

Folge, Ergebnis and Wirkung: consequences, results and effects

Folge commonly means consequence: something that follows from an event or action. Ergebnis commonly means result or outcome, including a measured result. Wirkung commonly means effect or impact. They overlap because an effect can be both a consequence and a result; common combinations help you choose.

At a glance
WordCore meaningTypical contextGrammar
Folgeconsequence; something followingCausal consequences and sequencesDie Folge; plural die Folgen.
Ergebnisresult; outcomeCalculations, tests, discussions and completed workDas Ergebnis; plural die Ergebnisse.
Wirkungeffect; impactAn influence on people or thingsDie Wirkung; plural die Wirkungen.

Folge

Meaning and usage: Folge highlights what follows from an action, circumstance or event. It can be desirable or undesirable, despite its frequent association with problems. The same noun also means an episode or a sequence, so die nächste Folge might refer to a program rather than a consequence. Identify whether the context is causal or sequential before translating.

Grammar: Die Folge; plural die Folgen. Useful patterns: eine Folge von + dative; etwas zur Folge haben; in der Folge.

Eine Folge des Streiks waren längere Wartezeiten.

One consequence of the strike was longer waiting times.

Heute sehen wir die letzte Folge der Serie.

Today we are watching the final episode of the series.

Ergebnis

Meaning and usage: Ergebnis presents what comes out of a process or effort. It suits an exam score, a calculation, a vote or a discussion’s outcome. It can also describe a consequence, so it is not limited to numbers or deliberately planned actions. The word often directs attention toward the resulting finding or end state rather than the chain of effects.

Grammar: Das Ergebnis; plural die Ergebnisse. Genitive des Ergebnisses. Common patterns: zu einem Ergebnis kommen and das Ergebnis einer Untersuchung.

Das Ergebnis der Abstimmung steht morgen fest.

The result of the vote will be known tomorrow.

Unser Gespräch hatte ein überraschendes Ergebnis.

Our conversation had a surprising outcome.

Wirkung

Meaning and usage: Wirkung concerns what something does to another person, object or situation. It suits a treatment’s effect, a speech’s impact or a design’s impression. It is not automatically an outcome that can be counted as a score. The word names the influence or change produced; specific wording can add whether it was strong, weak or absent.

Grammar: Die Wirkung; plural die Wirkungen. Useful patterns: eine Wirkung auf + accusative; Wirkung zeigen; eine Wirkung erzielen.

Die ruhige Musik hat eine entspannende Wirkung auf mich.

The calm music has a relaxing effect on me.

Die neue Beleuchtung verändert die Wirkung des Raums.

The new lighting changes the impression the room creates.

Overlap and context

An action’s Wirkung may become a Folge, and its overall outcome may be an Ergebnis. Instead of choosing by an absolute cause-versus-endpoint rule, notice the question being answered: what followed, what result emerged, or what influence did it have? Dictionaries themselves show overlapping definitions.

Common mistakes

  • Do not make Folgen automatically negative. Positive consequences are possible.
  • Use das Ergebnis with its -nisse plural: die Ergebnisse. Avoid applying the singular article to plural forms.
  • Wirkung does not mean that something necessarily works well. Eine schwache Wirkung describes a weak effect.

Memory aid: Folge follows; Ergebnis emerges; Wirkung works on someone or something. These are useful emphases, not sealed categories.

Show the answer

Ergebnis

A calculated numerical result is naturally an Ergebnis.
