| Lid | eyelid | the skin that covers an eye | das Lid; die Lider |
Lied
Meaning and usage: Use Lied for a song, including one you sing, learn or hear. It commonly refers to a sung text with a melody. Depending on a title or literary context, the noun can also refer to a poem or a longer poetic work. For everyday conversation about singing, song is the useful starting meaning.
Grammar: Neuter: das Lied, plural die Lieder; genitive des Liedes or des Lieds. Ein Lied singen places Lied in accusative. Das Lied hören and die Lieder lernen follow the same pattern. The ie spelling represents a long vowel here, but it is not a reliable universal rule for every German word.
Die Kinder lernen ein neues Lied.
The children are learning a new song.
Kennst du die Lieder dieser Band?
Do you know this band's songs?
Lid
Meaning and usage: Use Lid for an eyelid; Augenlid is the fuller everyday alternative. Each eye has an upper and lower lid. Contexts involving eyes, blinking, irritation or closing your eyes make this meaning clear. The word does not name a song even though the singular and plural sound the same as the musical noun.
Grammar: Neuter: das Lid, plural die Lider; genitive des Lides or des Lids. Das obere Lid has normal adjective inflection. In auf dem Lid, auf takes dative for a location; die Lider schließen has an accusative plural object. Write the plural with i, not ie.
Mein linkes Lid ist etwas gerötet.
My left eyelid is slightly red.
Sie schloss die Lider und ruhte sich aus.
She closed her eyelids and rested.
Overlap and context
These are homophones rather than overlapping meanings. Changing only Lied to Lid changes the referent completely. Because das applies to both and Lieder/Lider have the same pronunciation, neither gender nor the spoken plural resolves the ambiguity on its own. Normal sentences usually do: a person sings, composes or listens to a Lied, while an eye has a Lid. In writing, learn the word together with one typical action.
Common mistakes
- Write ein Lied singen, with ie; ein Lid singen would say that you sing an eyelid.
- Write die Lider schließen, without e after i; Lieder are songs.
- Do not make the vowel in Lid short just because it lacks ie; the two words have the same standard pronunciation.
Memory aid: Link Lied to learning a song and Lid to an eye's lid. The English eye-lid connection is a spelling aid; do not use it to predict the German article or plural.
Try it
Choose the correct spelling: Vor dem Einschlafen schließt er die Lieder/Lider.

He closes his eyelids before falling asleep. The context selects the anatomical noun, whose plural is written without ie.
