Three German short stories for beginners with questions

Read three original everyday German stories. Use the glossary, answer the questions and retell each situation. A1 and A2 are editorial estimates of difficulty, not certified levels; some words or structures may need support.

Read for meaning before checking every word

Read twice: first identify the person, place and problem; then find evidence for your answers. Open the key after deciding. One question asks for an inference rather than a stated fact. A short correct answer is enough.

Das Buch für Dienstag

A1 orientation

Check the story

  1. Where does Linh find the easy books?
    Show answer and reason

In einem kleinen Regal am Fenster. The employee points to that shelf; the entrance is where Linh asks, not where the books stand.

  2. True or false: Linh immediately looks up every unfamiliar word.
    Show answer and reason

Falsch. Sie schreibt ein Wort auf und liest weiter. The story gives one note and continued reading; it does not mention a dictionary search.

  3. When does Linh want to read at home?
    Show answer and reason

Am Dienstag. The story begins on Monday and says morgen. The title is another clue.

Retell in your own words

Tell a partner where Linh goes, what she chooses and what she plans for tomorrow. Use three short sentences; do not invent a name for the man.

Die Pumpe im Keller

A1–A2 bridge

Check the story

  1. Why can Paul not use his own pump?
    Show answer and reason

Sie ist kaputt. The low tyre is the problem he wants to solve; the broken pump prevents him solving it himself.

  2. Does Paul cycle to the training session?
    Show answer and reason

Nein, er geht zu Fuß. He wants to leave at five, before Amira returns at six, so he chooses to walk.

  3. What happens first: training or filling the tyre?
    Show answer and reason

Zuerst trainiert er, danach pumpt er den Reifen auf. He returns at quarter past six after training and only then gets the pump with Amira.

Retell in your own words

Explain Paul’s problem, his first solution and the later repair. Keep the sequence clear with zuerst and danach.

Der neue Treffpunkt

A2 orientation

Check the story

  1. Why is the meeting moved inside?
    Show answer and reason

Weil es stark regnet. The rain changes the plan. The group still meets at the centre.

  2. What will happen to the pots next week?
    Show answer and reason

Sie kommen nach draußen. The group prepares the plants indoors today; planting preparations are not cancelled entirely.

  3. What probably helps later arrivals find the group?
    Show answer and reason

Das Schild an der Vordertür. This is an inference: Samira writes the location on it, they hang it at the front, and another neighbour soon finds the room.

Retell in your own words

Describe the original plan, the change and how Samira and Ben help. Separate details stated in the text from your own guesses.

Use the story in a short spoken reply

Close the story and retell it using three cue words. Reopen it to check an uncertain detail. Then change one fact, such as the meeting time, and explain the consequences.

Continue with vocabulary practice, listening dialogues or speaking practice alone.

Questions about this topic

Do these stories certify A1 or A2?

No. The levels are editorial orientation. These questions are practice, not an official assessment.

Should I translate every sentence?

Understand the situation first. Use the glossary where needed, then return to the German text.

Must my answer match the key word for word?

No. Other accurate formulations are possible. The explanation identifies the supporting evidence.
