German negation: choose nicht or kein and place it clearly

For ordinary neutral negation of an indefinite noun phrase, kein usually replaces ein or a missing article: ein Termin becomes kein Termin; Zeit becomes keine Zeit. Use nicht for a clause or a selected expression, such as an adjective or a definite noun phrase. Then place the negation where the intended scope is clear. “Kein for every noun, nicht for every verb” is too broad to guide real sentences.

Choose from the positive phrase

Compare Ich habe einen Termin → Ich habe keinen Termin. and Wir brauchen Papier → Wir brauchen kein Papier. Kein negates the existence or availability of that indefinite item or quantity in the sentence. It also works with a plain occupation predicate: Ich bin kein Arzt. Keep the article position; do not add ein after kein.

Nicht does not replace a definite or possessive article: Das ist nicht mein Ordner. Compare Das ist kein Ordner., which rejects the classification as a folder. Der Ordner ist nicht leer. negates the adjective. Choose what you mean before choosing the word.

Choose the negative meaning first

  1. ein → kein

    ein Termin → kein Termin

    Neutral indefinite noun-phrase negation.

  2. Adjektiv

    Der Raum ist nicht frei.

    Nicht precedes the predicate adjective.

  3. Verbklammer

    Ich habe nicht gebucht.

    The participle stays after nicht.

  4. Kontrast

nicht am Montag, sondern am Dienstag

    The correction identifies the focus.

Selection, inflection and position are separate checks; a single “noun versus verb” slogan cannot replace them.

Give kein the matching case ending

Kein follows the ein-pattern in the singular and has plural forms. The table supplies determiner forms before a noun. Case comes from the sentence construction, not from the fact that it is negative: mit keinem Plan has dative after mit; keinen Plan haben has accusative. Dative plural noun endings still apply.

Put neutral nicht inside the verbal bracket

With a simple finite verb and no following predicate material, nicht often appears near the end: Ich verstehe die Frage nicht. With an infinitive, participle or separable prefix, it normally precedes that closing verbal material: Ich kann heute nicht kommen. Ich habe die Datei nicht gespeichert. Ich rufe heute nicht an. So “nicht is always the final word” fails as soon as the bracket is visible.

Predicate adjectives and closely connected complements also remain after nicht: Der Raum ist nicht frei. Nora wohnt nicht in Bonn. In a subordinate clause, the final verb group follows: weil ich die Datei nicht gespeichert habe. These are usable neutral patterns, not a rule that every object and adverb has one fixed position.

Make the rejected alternative clear

For an explicit contrast, place nicht before the focused expression and support it with context or stress: Wir treffen uns nicht am Montag, sondern am Dienstag. rejects Monday. Nicht Nora hat den Raum gebucht, sondern Minh. corrects the person. Do not move nicht randomly and assume the message remains identical.

Scope can change a quantity claim: Nicht alle kommen. says that the whole group will not attend; some may come. Keiner kommt. says that nobody comes. Negating “all” is not the same claim as asserting “none”. Read the full expression, not only the negative word.

Allow contrastive nicht ein where its meaning is intended

Ich habe keinen Schlüssel. is the ordinary way to say you have no key. Ich habe nicht einen Schlüssel, sondern zwei. emphasizes the number: not one, but two. It is not a neutral alternative with the same meaning. This is why a blanket ban on nicht ein would be misleading.

Keep related contrasts separate: not required versus prohibited, not yet versus no longer, and corrections with sondern have their own meaning choices. This reference gives the selection and placement foundation; the linked lessons take those contrasts further.

Eight checks with explained answers

Try each task before opening the answer. Read the reason as well as the completed sentence.

1. Neutral denial: Ich habe ___ Termin. (ein Termin)

keinen. Kein replaces ein; Termin is masculine accusative.

2. Negate the adjective: Der Raum ist ___ frei.

nicht. Nicht precedes the predicate adjective; kein does not modify adjectives alone.

3. Deny ownership: Das ist ___ mein Ordner.

nicht. Mein remains in the phrase; do not combine kein with mein here.

4. Complete: mit ___ Teilnehmern (kein).

mit keinen Teilnehmern. Dative plural requires keinen and the noun’s plural n.

5. Place nicht neutrally: Ich habe die Datei gespeichert.

Ich habe die Datei nicht gespeichert. Nicht comes before the closing participle.

6. Place nicht before the predicate adjective: weil der Raum frei ist.

weil der Raum nicht frei ist. Nicht precedes frei; the finite verb remains final.

7. Does Nicht alle kommen. mean nobody comes?

No. It denies that everyone comes. To say nobody, use Keiner kommt. or Niemand kommt..

8. You have two keys. Can you truthfully say Ich habe keinen Schlüssel?

No. Use Ich habe nicht einen Schlüssel, sondern zwei. if you want to correct the number.

Clarify a room booking

Write a short correction that denies one item, one state and one date. Model: Wir brauchen keinen Beamer. Der kleine Raum ist nicht frei. Wir treffen uns nicht am Montag, sondern am Dienstag. Ich habe die Einladung nicht verschickt. Replace the details with your own situation. Mark what each negation rejects, then read the correction with stress on the changed date.

Questions about this topic

Does nicht always go at the very end?

No. Infinitives, participles, separated prefixes, predicate adjectives and some complements can follow it. Context and focus also affect its position.

Can I answer a whole question with nicht?

For an ordinary negative answer use nein. Nicht belongs within an expression or clause; short replies such as Nicht heute add the rejected expression.
