Find the middle field before sorting it
In Heute hat Nora ihrem Bruder das Buch gegeben, heute is before the finite verb, hat opens the bracket and gegeben closes it. The middle field is Nora ihrem Bruder das Buch. In weil Nora ihrem Bruder das Buch gegeben hat, the middle field follows weil and precedes the final verb group.
This lesson concerns the order inside that field. It does not put every sentence element into a single universal slot. An initial time phrase has already left the middle field; do not count it again when arranging the remaining phrases. Identify whole units such as wegen des Regens rather than moving individual words out of their phrases.
Changing the object form changes the neutral sequence
- Two nouns
Ich gebe der Kollegin das Buch.
Dative noun before accusative noun.
- One pronoun
Ich gebe es der Kollegin.
The unstressed pronoun precedes the noun.
- Two pronouns
Ich gebe es ihr.
Accusative pronoun before dative pronoun.
- New recipient in focus
Ich gebe das Buch meiner Schwester.
A known item can precede a newly supplied recipient.
Use the neutral object patterns
| Object types | Complete example |
|---|---|
| Dativ + Akkusativ | Ich gebe der Kollegin das Buch. |
| Akkusativpronomen + Dativnomen | Ich gebe es der Kollegin. |
| Dativpronomen + Akkusativnomen | Ich gebe ihr das Buch. |
| Akkusativpronomen + Dativpronomen | Ich gebe es ihr. |
With two ordinary noun objects, dative before accusative is a useful default. Replace only one object by an unstressed personal pronoun and the pronoun normally comes before the noun. Replace both and the neutral order is accusative before dative: es ihr. The subject pronoun is normally early too: Heute habe ich es ihr gegeben.
Determine case from the verb construction, not from position. Ihr is dative because of the recipient role with geben, not because it comes last. The same ordering principles operate inside a subordinate clause: weil ich es ihr gegeben habe. A reflexive pronoun also tends to appear early, but its exact position interacts with the subject and other material.
TeKaMoLo gives one useful starting sequence
| Adverbial type | Phrase |
|---|---|
| Te | gestern |
| Ka | wegen des Regens |
| Mo | mit dem Bus |
| Lo | zur Schule |
Together: Wir sind gestern wegen des Regens mit dem Bus zur Schule gefahren. The mnemonic sorts temporal, causal, modal and local information. Modal here means manner or means, not “a modal verb”. Mit dem Bus tells how we travelled. The final goal also connects closely to fahren.
You do not need all four types. Nor should you place every object after all four adverbials. Ich habe der Kollegin gestern die Unterlagen gegeben is ordinary: the recipient precedes the time phrase. Verb-bound complements, sentence-level comments and negation have their own behavior. TeKaMoLo is a planning aid for relevant adverbials, not an algorithm for the entire middle field.
Let the question guide what comes later
Suppose the book is already known and the question is Wem hast du das Buch gegeben? A natural answer is Ich habe das Buch meiner Schwester gegeben, with the new recipient later and stressed. This changes the neutral noun-object order for a communicative reason. If the question is Was hast du deiner Schwester gegeben?, Ich habe meiner Schwester ein Wörterbuch gegeben puts the new thing later.
Known or definite material often comes before new or indefinite material; short material often precedes a long phrase. These are tendencies that can reinforce or compete with one another. The same words can therefore have more than one acceptable order. Moving them can make a different question sound like the natural context, even when the basic event is unchanged.
Distinguish a neutral model from a marked choice
A stressed pronoun is not the same as an unstressed reference. In Ich habe es IHR gegeben, nicht ihrem Bruder, emphasis selects the recipient against an alternative. In ordinary writing use context or typographic emphasis sparingly; in speech the stress carries the contrast. Do not infer that every pronoun is freely movable merely because a special context can license an unusual order.
Moving heute to the front gives Heute habe ich es ihr gegeben. It creates a starting point for the whole sentence; it does not require the remaining objects to swap roles. Likewise negation should be placed according to what is denied, not assigned the leftover final slot. When a sentence becomes long, split it into two coherent sentences rather than stacking every detail into one exercise pattern.
Check your decisions: eight explained tasks
1. Use a neutral noun-object order: Ich habe … gegeben. (das Buch / der Kollegin)
Ich habe der Kollegin das Buch gegeben. Dative noun before accusative noun is the neutral starting pattern. Other contexts can support a different order.
2. Replace only das Buch by a pronoun in Ich gebe der Kollegin das Buch.
Ich gebe es der Kollegin. Unstressed accusative es comes before the noun recipient.
3. Replace only der Kollegin by a pronoun in the same sentence.
Ich gebe ihr das Buch. The dative pronoun now precedes the noun object.
4. Replace both objects with unstressed pronouns.
Ich gebe es ihr. With two unstressed object pronouns, accusative normally precedes dative.
5. Identify Te, Ka, Mo, Lo: gestern / mit dem Bus / zur Schule / wegen des Regens.
gestern = time; wegen des Regens = reason; mit dem Bus = means; zur Schule = place/goal. Their neutral teaching sequence is the one shown in the table.
6. Answer with the new recipient late: Wem hast du das Buch gegeben? Use meiner Schwester.
Ich habe das Buch meiner Schwester gegeben. The book is known; the new recipient is later. This is why noun dative-before-accusative is not an absolute rule.
7. Put Ich habe es ihr gegeben after weil.
weil ich es ihr gegeben habe. The internal pronoun order stays ich – es – ihr while the verb group occupies the final bracket.
8. Does Ich habe der Kollegin gestern die Unterlagen gegeben violate TeKaMoLo?
No. TeKaMoLo orders relevant adverbials relative to one another; it does not force every object to follow the time phrase. The dative recipient can come before gestern.
Give the same information to two listeners
Describe returning a borrowed item in four sentences. First tell someone who knows nothing: introduce the item and recipient with nouns. Then retell it to someone who already knows both, using pronouns. Add time, reason and means only where they help. Finally answer a focused question about the recipient, allowing that new information to come later. Read both versions and explain which words are already known. Do not change case merely to match a memorized order.
Use the rule in a wider context
For the sentence bracket and speaking fluency, use German word-order practice. To decide object case before arranging phrases, use dative and accusative reply practice.
Questions about this topic
Is TeKaMoLo a fixed grammar law?
No. It is a useful neutral sequence for comparable adverbials. Information focus, weight and the verb’s own complements can produce other natural orders.
Why does object order change with pronouns?
Unstressed personal pronouns tend to appear early. With two such object pronouns, accusative normally precedes dative; two noun objects often prefer the opposite case order.
