Home / Reply to German birthday wishes: thank-you phrases

How do I thank someone for birthday wishes in German?

Thank someone for German birthday wishes with Vielen Dank or Danke für die lieben Wünsche. In formal replies, Ihre matches Sie. Unlike a shared Christmas greeting, birthday wishes normally call for thanks rather than an automatic you too.

Reply with thanks, not an automatic “you too”

When someone congratulates you, thank them. Their birthday probably is not on the same date, so dir auch is not the normal reciprocal formula here. This differs from a shared holiday wish such as Frohe Weihnachten.

Check the situation

Only your birthday is being celebrated. Is Danke, dir auch the usual answer to Alles Gute zum Geburtstag?

Show answer

No. Thank the person instead: Vielen Dank! You do not know that it is their birthday too.

Several friends send kind wishes. Can you write Danke für eure lieben Wünsche?

Show answer

Yes. Eure refers to the familiar group’s wishes. For formal recipients use Ihre instead.
