Home / Pay by card in German: questions and tip phrases

How do I ask to pay by card in German?

Ask Kann ich mit Karte bezahlen? before assuming a card will work. If you want to add a tip by card, clarify that separately and agree the final total. Payment options differ by venue.

Separate three payment questions

First ask whether card payment is possible. Then ask which cards are accepted: Welche Karten akzeptieren Sie? Finally clarify whether a chosen tip can be included. A yes to one question does not automatically answer the others. Mit Karte and bar name payment methods, not tipping amounts.

Ask before the card transaction

Do not assume that every venue accepts every card or processes tips through its terminal. Ask Kann ich mit Karte bezahlen? — “Can I pay by card?” If you want to add a tip that way, ask Kann ich das Trinkgeld mit Karte bezahlen? — “Can I pay the tip by card?” Then confirm the total before payment.

If you would rather separate the two payments, say Die Rechnung mit Karte, das Trinkgeld bar, bitte. — “The bill by card and the tip in cash, please.” This states a preference; the staff can explain how their payment process works. Check the amount displayed instead of treating a terminal’s suggested option as a requirement.

Two situations to practise

The following situations are invented for language practice. They do not describe a particular venue or its actual prices. Use the stated conditions for each example.

Clarify the accepted card

Kann ich mit Karte bezahlen?

Welche Karten akzeptieren Sie?

The first question asks about the payment method; the second asks about card types. Wait for the actual answer rather than assuming every card is accepted.

Agree a total before paying

Die Rechnung beträgt 20,80 Euro. Du möchtest insgesamt 22 Euro bezahlen.

Kann ich den Gesamtbetrag von zweiundzwanzig Euro mit Karte bezahlen?

The example includes a chosen €1.20 tip in the €22 total. It is a request that staff must answer, not a promise that this venue can process it.

Try a reply, then read the explanation

You ask about card payment. The reply is Nur bar, bitte. In this situation you have cash. What can you say?

Dann bezahle ich bar.

Nur bar means cash only in this reply. The model adapts to the answer; it does not repeat a card request as if it had been accepted.

You want to pay a €17.40 bill and a chosen tip as a €19 total by card. Ask about that total.

Kann ich insgesamt neunzehn Euro mit Karte bezahlen?

Insgesamt makes the €19 total explicit; it would include €1.60 extra. The question still allows staff to explain whether their process supports it.

You prefer the bill by card and the tip in cash. State that preference.

Die Rechnung mit Karte und das Trinkgeld bar, bitte.

This is a useful shortened request. A complete sentence is also possible: Ich würde gern die Rechnung mit Karte und das Trinkgeld bar bezahlen. Staff can explain their procedure.
