How do I order breakfast in German?

To order breakfast in German, name the breakfast and drink, then check what is included. Inklusive, separat and gegen Aufpreis tell you whether an item is included or costs extra. Practise the fictional menu and its follow-up questions below.

Read a breakfast menu without guessing

The following is an original practice menu, not an offer from a real café.

Illustrative café menu
Menu textMeaning
Kleines Frühstück: zwei Brötchen, Butter und MarmeladeSmall breakfast: two rolls, butter and jam
Käsefrühstück: Brot, Käse und ObstCheese breakfast: bread, cheese and fruit
Ei gegen Aufpreis; Getränke separatEgg for an extra charge; drinks separate

In this example, neither breakfast includes a drink. Mit means “with”; ohne means “without”. Inklusive signals something included, gegen Aufpreis an extra charge, and pro Person a price or portion per person. These small words can matter more than a long list of food names.

Ask „Ist der Kaffee im Frühstück enthalten?“ — “Is coffee included with the breakfast?” If you want an addition, try „Kann ich ein Ei dazu bestellen?“ — “Can I order an egg with it?”

An order and the reply you need to understand

You: „Ich hätte gern das Käsefrühstück und einen Tee, bitte.“
“I would like the cheese breakfast and a tea, please.”

Server: „Schwarzen Tee oder Kräutertee?“
“Black tea or herbal tea?”

You: „Kräutertee, bitte. Und ein Ei dazu.“
“Herbal tea, please. And an egg with it.”

The reply asks you to choose a type of tea. Saying only “yes” would leave the choice open. Listen for oder (“or”), then repeat the option you want. If you missed it, „Könnten Sie die Auswahl bitte wiederholen?“ means “Could you repeat the options, please?”

Make a preference clear

„Gibt es das auch ohne Schinken?“ asks whether the dish is available without ham. „Ich esse kein Fleisch. Was können Sie empfehlen?“ means “I do not eat meat. What can you recommend?” Removing one named ingredient does not establish everything else in a dish. For an allergy, explain it to staff and ask about the actual ingredients and preparation.

At a bakery, you may hear „Zum Mitnehmen?“ — “To take away?” Answer „Ja, zum Mitnehmen“ or „Nein, zum Hieressen“. A table-service café may use a different exchange.

Try your own breakfast order

Using the sample menu, order the cheese breakfast, ask for a tea and check whether an egg costs extra. Say the whole request before opening the answer.

Show answer

Ich hätte gern das Käsefrühstück und einen Tee. Kostet das Ei extra?

“I would like the cheese breakfast and a tea. Does the egg cost extra?” The sample menu says it does.

Next, change tea to coffee and ask about taking the order away. Changing one detail makes you choose your words instead of memorising a single line.

Two worked examples

These additional examples and checks were written for this focused lesson.

Ich hätte gern das kleine Frühstück. Ist ein Kaffee dabei?
I would like the small breakfast. Is a coffee included? The name alone does not answer the second question.

Zum Mitnehmen oder zum Hieressen? – Zum Hieressen, bitte.
To take away or eat here? – To eat here, please. Repeat the chosen option instead of answering only yes.

Check the situation

The sample menu says Getränke separat. Is tea included in the breakfast price?

Show answer

No. In this fictional menu, drinks are separate. Ask about the actual café’s offer before ordering.

The server asks Schwarzen Tee oder Kräutertee? You want herbal tea. What can you say?

Show answer

Kräutertee, bitte. Oder introduces a choice; ja alone does not identify which tea you want.
