Home / At a German bakery: order bread, slices and rolls

How do I order bread at a German bakery?

At a German bakery, name the bread, the amount and whether you want it sliced. Ein halbes Brot, eine Scheibe and ein Laib are different quantities. Ask whether halves or slicing are available rather than assuming every bakery offers them.

Order the amount and the slicing you want

You: „Ich hätte gern ein halbes Roggenbrot, bitte.“
“I would like half a rye loaf, please.”

Baker: „Geschnitten?“
“Sliced?”

You: „Ja, bitte. Und zwei Brötchen.“
“Yes, please. And two rolls.”

This is an original practice exchange. Not every loaf is sold in halves or sliced on request, so you can first ask „Kann ich davon ein halbes Brot bekommen?“ — “Can I have half a loaf of that?” If you prefer it whole, answer „Am Stück, bitte“ — “In one piece, please.”

Eine Scheibe Brot means one slice; ein Laib Brot means one loaf. Asking for zwei Scheiben is therefore different from asking for zwei Brote. Quantity words help avoid a surprisingly large order.

Practise your bread order

Now make a complete order with the quantity you need and your slicing preference. Practise both geschnitten and am Stück so you can answer the follow-up, not only start the conversation.

Two worked examples

These additional examples and checks were written for this focused lesson.

Kann ich davon ein halbes Brot bekommen? – Ja. Geschnitten? – Am Stück, bitte.
Can I have half a loaf of that? – Yes. Sliced? – In one piece, please. Am Stück answers the slicing question, not the size question.

Ich hätte gern drei Brötchen und zwei Scheiben von diesem Brot.
I would like three rolls and two slices of this bread. The quantity words distinguish whole items from slices.

Check the situation

You want two slices, not two whole loaves. Choose zwei Brote or zwei Scheiben Brot.

Show answer

Zwei Scheiben Brot. Zwei Brote would normally mean two loaves.

The baker asks Geschnitten? You want the bread unsliced. What can you say?

Show answer

Am Stück, bitte. You can also say Nicht geschnitten, bitte. The request is subject to what the bakery can provide.
