How do I write a Christmas card in German?

A short German Christmas card needs a greeting, a wish and a closing. Choose ich or wir for the sender and dir, euch or Ihnen for the recipient. Use the complete models below, then adapt the message to your relationship.

Three original Christmas messages to adapt

You can use the following models as starting points. Replace the names, choose a sincere closing and keep the same address form throughout. A short accurate message usually needs less repair than a long list of copied wishes.

Original templates: friend, group and formal recipient
SituationGerman messageEnglish translation
A message to a friendLiebe Jana, ich wünsche dir frohe Weihnachten! Genieß die Feiertage. Liebe Grüße, AlexDear Jana, merry Christmas! Enjoy the holidays. Best wishes, Alex.
A card to two friendsLiebe Jana, lieber Ben, wir wünschen euch frohe Weihnachten und eine schöne gemeinsame Zeit. Herzliche Grüße, Alex und SamDear Jana and Ben, we wish you a merry Christmas and a lovely time together. Warm wishes, Alex and Sam.
A formal work messageSehr geehrte Frau Weber, ich wünsche Ihnen frohe Weihnachten und einen guten Start ins neue Jahr. Mit freundlichen Grüßen, Alex MorganDear Ms Weber, I wish you a merry Christmas and a good start to the new year. Kind regards, Alex Morgan.

The last example keeps Ihnen throughout. Do not add Genieß die Feiertage to it without changing the address form; that imperative belongs with du. A formal version is Genießen Sie die Feiertage. For longer work messages, see German email writing practice.

Choose the wish before writing the card

The short phrase does not force you to choose between du and Sie. A longer message does. Start with the relationship you already have with the recipient: do you normally use a first name and du, or a formal surname and Sie? Do not change that relationship just because it is Christmas.

The recipient determines dir, euch or Ihnen
RecipientOriginal German exampleEnglish meaning
One person, informalIch wünsche dir frohe Weihnachten.I wish you a merry Christmas.
Several people, informalWir wünschen euch frohe Weihnachten. We wish you all a merry Christmas.
One or more people, formalIch wünsche Ihnen frohe Weihnachten.I wish you a merry Christmas.
A formal group, made explicitWir wünschen Ihnen allen erholsame Feiertage. We wish all of you a restful holiday.

Use ich wünsche when you are writing for yourself and wir wünschen when several people send the message. The number of senders does not decide whether the recipient is dir or euch. For wider context, see how to choose du or Sie.

Check the recipient

Task: You and a colleague are writing to two clients whom you address formally. Complete: Wir wünschen ___ frohe Weihnachten. Choose dir, euch or Ihnen.

Show answer

Answer: Ihnen. Formal address works for one or more recipients. Euch would assume an informal relationship. Now change the audience to two close friends: the answer becomes euch.

For the traditions behind the occasion, read German Christmas traditions. Keep the card focused on the recipient rather than adding cultural explanations they did not ask for.

Two worked examples

These additional examples and checks were written for this focused lesson.

Liebe Mira, ich wünsche dir frohe Weihnachten. Liebe Grüße, Nora
Dear Mira, merry Christmas. Best wishes, Nora. One sender writes to one familiar recipient.

Sehr geehrte Frau Hoffmann, wir wünschen Ihnen erholsame Feiertage. Mit freundlichen Grüßen, Ihr Team
Dear Ms Hoffmann, we wish you restful holidays. Kind regards, your team. Several senders do not change formal Ihnen to euch.

Check the situation

Three colleagues write to one friend they address as du: Wir wünschen ___ frohe Weihnachten. Which pronoun fits?

Show answer

Dir. Wir counts the senders; dir refers to the one informally addressed recipient.

A formal card uses Ihnen. Can you add Genieß die Feiertage without changing the address form?

Show answer

No. Genieß addresses du. Use Genießen Sie die Feiertage to keep the formal address.
