Why remember the article with the noun?

Learn der Schlüssel as one retrieval unit, not Schlüssel first and its gender later. Add die Schlüssel and a short phrase so you can also use the word. Grammatical gender belongs to the noun; the article form can then change with case and number in a sentence.

Retrieval means trying to produce an answer before seeing it. Research supports retrieval practice as a general learning method; it does not establish a guaranteed result for this particular worksheet. A mistaken attempt is useful when you check it and try again in a new context.

Learn by seeing

Recall the whole noun

Fill in the nominative singular article: der, die or das. Say each answer before opening the solution.

___ Schlüssel

Reveal the answer

Der Schlüssel liegt auf dem Tisch.

___ Tasse

Reveal the answer

die Tasse

Plural: die Tassen

Die Tasse ist grün.

___ Buch

Reveal the answer

das Buch

Plural: die Bücher

Das Buch ist neu.

Cover the answers. Can you name the article, noun and plural for each object?

First retrieve the article and noun; then check the plural and a short example sentence. These prompts use the nominative singular, so the task tests gender rather than a changing sentence case.

24-noun diagnostic: say the article first

All blanks below ask for nominative singular: der, die or das. Cover the answer key. For each noun, say the complete form and then attempt the plural. Record “article needed help” and “plural needed help” separately.

Now retrieve the subject article in each sentence. These examples stay in nominative so the exercise still checks gender; accusative and dative practice belongs in the separate case guide.

  2. ___ Rechnung liegt im Umschlag.
  3. ___ Gespräch dauert zehn Minuten.
  4. ___ Stuhl steht neben der Tür.
  5. ___ Fenster ist offen.
  6. ___ Woche war anstrengend.

A practical review routine

  • Attempt recall now; inspect only the missed article or plural.
  • Retest missed items later that day, then on another day with changed sentences.
  • Mix genders in the next round so the order does not give away the answer.
  • Add words from your own conversations, always with a checked article and plural.

The intervals are a suggested routine, not a scientifically optimal schedule for every learner. Patterns such as many -ung nouns being feminine can help, but a pattern is not a substitute for checking a new word.
