Hobbies in German: activities, preferences and useful replies

For hobbies, learn a verb phrase rather than a noun alone: Rad fahren becomes Ich fahre gern Rad. Add when, how often or with whom you do it. That gives another person something concrete to respond to.

A reference of hobbies and complete activity phrases

The German noun is das Hobby; its plural is die Hobbys, with y kept before s. Die Freizeit means free time. Not every free-time activity has to be a serious hobby. Choose expressions that describe what you actually do, including quiet, inexpensive and occasional activities.

German activities: learn the phrase and one sentence
ActivityExample sentenceMeaning
lesenIch lese abends.read
kochenIch koche am Wochenende.cook
backenIch backe Brot.bake
Musik hörenIch höre Musik.listen to music
Gitarre spielenIch spiele Gitarre.play guitar
singenIch singe im Chor.sing
zeichnenIch zeichne Tiere.draw
fotografierenIch fotografiere draußen.take photographs
wandernIch wandere am Sonntag.hike
Rad fahrenIch fahre Rad.cycle
schwimmenIch schwimme zweimal pro Woche.swim
Fußball spielenIch spiele Fußball.play football / soccer
Schach spielenIch spiele Schach.play chess
Computerspiele spielenIch spiele Computerspiele.play computer games
Freunde treffenIch treffe Freunde.meet friends

Notice the verb combinations. You spielst Fußball or spielst Gitarre, but you hörst Musik when listening. Rad fahren uses fahren; schwimmen already supplies the activity verb. Adding machen or spielen to every hobby will not produce a natural phrase. Keep the whole expression as your retrieval unit.

Choose a picture and say the complete activity phrase. The example sentence shows one useful verb form. These are fictional scenes, not a test of how a hobby must look.

The groups overlap. Photography can happen indoors; cooking can be social or solitary. Use the map to find a plausible choice, not to infer a person’s personality. Pick one activity you like, one you sometimes do and one you do not enjoy. Those three choices create more useful practice than inventing a long list of impressive interests.

Express liking, frequency and a simple preference

Put gern or gerne into the activity sentence: Ich zeichne gern and Ich zeichne gerne both express enjoyment. To say that you do not enjoy an activity, use Ich schwimme nicht gern. This differs from Ich schwimme nicht, which simply says you do not swim.

Frequency is a separate detail: oft, manchmal, selten mean often, sometimes and rarely. Ich koche gern, aber selten is coherent: you enjoy cooking but do it rarely. Give a concrete frequency if it matters: Ich spiele einmal pro Woche Schach.

A simple choice can use lieber: Heute lese ich lieber means that today you prefer to read. This is one useful preference pattern, not a full comparison lesson. You can also give a plain reason: Ich lese gern. Das ist ruhig. A short clear explanation is enough.

Match the follow-up to the missing information

Was machst du gern in deiner Freizeit? invites an activity. After hearing an answer, choose a more specific follow-up. Wie oft? asks frequency; Mit wem? asks the people involved; Wo? asks place; Wann? asks time. Avoid repeating a question that the speaker has already answered.

Consider Ich spiele am Mittwoch mit meiner Schwester Schach. You already know an activity, day and partner. Wie oft spielt ihr? can still be useful because one Wednesday does not establish a regular frequency. By contrast, Mit wem? asks for information already supplied. Work through the German question-words guide for the wider question system.

Keep invitations separate from statements of interest. Ich wandere gern does not promise that you will join a particular trip. You can reply Ich habe am Sonntag keine Zeit without changing your stated hobby.

Use three fictional activity cards to make a choice

These cards describe a practice meeting. They are invented, not real event listings. Read the constraints before choosing.

  • Lea: Ich zeichne gern. Heute möchte ich drinnen bleiben.
  • Omar: Ich spiele gern Schach. Ich habe nur dreißig Minuten Zeit.
  • Nina: Ich fahre gern Rad. Heute habe ich aber kein Fahrrad.

A short chess game could suit Omar’s interest and time limit, if the other person agrees. Drawing indoors fits Lea’s stated plan. Nina’s general enjoyment of cycling does not remove today’s practical obstacle. The task is to connect an activity with the information actually given, not to guess additional preferences.

For each person, propose one next question: ask Lea what she draws, Omar whether a short game is suitable, or Nina what she would prefer today. There is no need to force all three into the same activity.

Eight activity and reply checks

  1. Write the German plural of das Hobby.

    Show answer and reason

die Hobbys. German keeps y before the plural s; the English spelling hobbies is not the German plural.

  2. Complete: Ich … gern Rad.

    Show answer and reason

fahre: Ich fahre gern Rad. The activity phrase is Rad fahren, not Rad spielen.

  3. You enjoy listening to music. Choose höre or spiele.

    Show answer and reason

Ich höre gern Musik. Spielen would describe making music in a different phrase, such as Gitarre spielen.

  4. Does Ich koche gern, aber selten contradict itself?

    Show answer and reason

No. Gern expresses enjoyment; selten expresses frequency. You can enjoy an activity without doing it often.

  5. A person says Ich lese am Abend. Ask about frequency.

    Show answer and reason

Wie oft liest du? Am Abend tells you the time of day, not how frequently the person reads.

  6. Which activity fits Lea’s stated wish: drawing indoors or a compulsory outdoor bike ride?

    Show answer and reason

Drawing indoors fits her stated interest and today’s plan. The text does not support the outdoor ride.

  7. Can you conclude that Nina is cycling today?

    Show answer and reason

No. She enjoys cycling but says she has no bicycle today. A general preference is not proof of today’s activity.

  8. Decline a Sunday plan without saying that you dislike hiking.

    Show answer and reason

Ich wandere gern, aber am Sonntag habe ich keine Zeit. This preserves the interest while declining the proposed time.

Build a short, truthful activity answer

Choose two phrases from the reference. For each, add enjoyment and one concrete detail: Ich backe gern. Am Samstag backe ich Brot. Then ask a partner one relevant follow-up. If working alone, write a plausible question for the detail you left out and answer it in a new sentence.

On the next attempt, change the time or frequency while keeping the same activity. You will retrieve the phrase in a fresh context instead of memorising a single biography. For a very short social exchange, continue with small talk with neighbours. For the learner vocabulary area, see German vocabulary practice.

Both can express that you enjoy an activity: Ich lese gern and Ich lese gerne. You can choose either in these examples.

How do I say that I enjoy an activity but rarely do it?
