Home / Zwar … aber: concession and contrast in German

How do I use zwar … aber to acknowledge a point and contrast it?

Zwar … aber acknowledges one point and gives it a counterweight. Both descriptions can be affirmative; keep the intended contrast clear and put a comma before aber.

Start with the intended meaning

Zwar marks the point being acknowledged; aber introduces the counterweight. The relationship is concessive, so the second point should explain why the first does not settle the conclusion. A negative verb form is not required.
