Home / Nicht nur … sondern auch: meaning and focus

How does the position of nicht nur change what I include?

Nicht nur … sondern auch adds a second included point with emphasis. The position of nicht nur determines which person, activity or other part is being contrasted.

Start with the intended meaning

The frame includes the first point and adds another, often less expected one. Keep the two parts grammatically parallel and put a comma before sondern. Choose the position of nicht nur from the intended contrast.

Put each marker before the part it coordinates

The marker’s position controls scope. Nicht nur Lea hat geholfen contrasts helpers; Lea hat nicht nur gekocht contrasts activities. For that narrower distinction, continue with nicht nur … sondern auch.

Apply the pattern in another context

Nicht nur Nora, sondern auch Tuan haben angerufen.

The contrasted elements are the callers. Both called; the frame does not exclude Nora.

Nora hat nicht nur angerufen, sondern auch geschrieben.

The contrasted elements are activities performed by Nora.
