Home / Ja, nein or doch: answering German negative questions

How do I answer a negative question with ja, nein or doch?

Decide what fact you want to state before choosing the response particle. A full sentence makes the intended positive or negative answer clear.

Start with the intended meaning

Keep the intended fact clear while practising the responses. The sentence-pattern table remains available when you need a word-order reminder.

Answer a negative question with a clear proposition

A question’s negative wording and your intended answer are separate decisions. In the ordinary learner pattern, answer a positive yes/no question with ja for the positive proposition and nein for the negative. After a negative question, doch clearly rejects the negative wording and affirms the positive proposition. Add the full sentence while practising so the listener knows what you mean.

For Kommst du heute nicht?, Doch, ich komme. means you are coming; Nein, ich komme nicht. means you are not coming. A bare ja after negative wording can depend on conversational interpretation. For an unambiguous beginner reply, use doch plus a positive sentence when contradicting the negative, or nein plus the negative sentence when confirming it.

1. You are coming. Answer: Kommst du nicht?

Answer and reason: Doch, ich komme. Reject the negative, then state the positive fact.

2. You have no pen. Answer: Hast du keinen Stift?

Answer and reason: Nein, ich habe keinen Stift. Confirm the negative fact in a full sentence.

3. You understand. Answer: Verstehst du?

Answer and reason: Ja, ich verstehe. The question is positive, so ordinary agreement uses ja.

4. Create a positive and a negative question, then answer both with the same intended fact.

Answer and reason: Ist der Kurs heute? – Ja, er ist heute. Ist der Kurs nicht heute? – Doch, er ist heute. The fact stays fixed while the response particle changes with the question.
