Home / German dative: verb patterns, forms and plural endings

When do I use the dative in German?

Some verbs and prepositions require dative. Its form follows the German construction, not a general idea of who receives something. Check the whole noun phrase, including a possible dative plural -n.

Check the noun as well as the article

The article carries much case information, but some nouns change too. Notice des Kurses and des Tickets in the tables. Dative plurals commonly add -n if the plural does not already end in n or s: mit den Kursen, but mit den Gruppen and mit den Teams. Weak masculine nouns form a separate class, for example den Studenten.

3. Complete: Nora arbeitet mit ___ Gruppe. (die Gruppe).

mit der Gruppe. Mit requires dative, so feminine die becomes der.

5. Complete: Wir sprechen mit ___ Kindern..

mit den Kindern. Mit requires dative. Plural die becomes den, and Kinder has the dative plural Kindern.

8. Repair the case: Ich helfe den Besucher..

Ich helfe dem Besucher. Helfen requires dative. Do not choose accusative merely because a person follows the verb.
