Fruit and vegetables in German: names, articles and quantities

Fruit as a food category is das Obst; vegetables are usually referred to collectively as das Gemüse. For individual items, learn der Apfel – die Äpfel or die Tomate – die Tomaten. Use a count, a weight or a container to say how much you mean.

See the two everyday vocabulary groups

A produce reference should help you move from a familiar food to its German name, then from the name to a useful quantity. Begin with the items you actually eat. The two groups below organize everyday food words. They do not attempt to settle botanical categories; a tomato can belong under Gemüse in an ordinary food list.

Recognize the food before naming it. The labels give dictionary forms; a picture can show several pieces. Obst and Gemüse are everyday food groups here.

For each group, point to a drawing or imagine an item on your kitchen table. Say the name with its article. Then cover the list and retrieve three names in a different order. If you always start with the apple, you may be remembering the list position rather than the word you need.

Karotte and Möhre are both useful words for a carrot: die Karotte – die Karotten, die Möhre – die Möhren. You do not need to decide that one is the only correct German name. Learn the form you hear locally and recognize the other on labels or in recipes.

The table chooses die Paprika – die Paprikas for a bell pepper. Der Paprika is also accepted for the vegetable, and the plural Paprika is possible too. This is a choice of one consistent reference form, not a claim that the alternatives are errors. In a recipe, the similar word may also refer to the spice, so check the ingredient and quantity.

Obst and Gemüse are category words, not ordinary item counts

Say Das Obst ist frisch and Das Gemüse ist frisch. Both category nouns work as singular here, even though a bowl may contain several separate items. Obst has no ordinary plural. For types, use Obstsorten; for one piece, use ein Stück Obst. Name the item directly when you can: ein Apfel.

Gemüse is also commonly collective in everyday food language. The dictionary does record a plural die Gemüse; it would be misleading to say the word can never have one. For beginner notes about types, Gemüsesorten is a clear choice. For a quantity, say viel Gemüse or eine Portion Gemüse, not an invented count such as two unspecified “Gemüses”.

Choose a count, weight or container

For separate items, use a number and the appropriate noun: drei Äpfel, zwei Gurken, fünf Tomaten. One item uses singular: eine Gurke. These short labels do not yet form a whole request or tell you every grammatical ending a sentence may need.

For weight, ein Kilo Kartoffeln and 500 Gramm Erdbeeren are practical noun groups. The food word still tells you what is being measured. A container adds a different piece of information: eine Schale Erdbeeren. A bowl or punnet is not a fixed weight; do not assume every container has the same number of grams. Use the German counting guide when the number itself causes trouble.

A small planning note might read 2 Äpfel, 1 Gurke, 500 Gramm Tomaten. Read it aloud as zwei Äpfel, eine Gurke, fünfhundert Gramm Tomaten. The aim is to preserve which item and which amount belong together.

Notice the forms that are easy to miss

Apfel becomes Äpfel, with an umlaut and no extra written ending. Kartoffel becomes Kartoffeln. Many words ending in -e add -n, as in Birne – Birnen and Tomate – Tomaten. Learn these useful pairs without assuming that every German noun follows the same rule.

When a word is unfamiliar, look at its spelling before making a memory cue. In Gemüse, preserve ü; in Äpfel, preserve Ä. The German alphabet guide helps you spell these forms. For a wider comparison of noun endings, use the noun-plural reference.

Eight produce and quantity checks

Try the quantity or word form first, then reveal the explanation. These are invented practice notes, not a copied shopping dialogue.

  1. Name an apple with its article, then two apples.

    Check answer and explanation

    der Apfel – zwei Äpfel

The plural changes A to Ä. Zwei already gives the quantity; do not keep the singular Apfel.

  2. Fill the verb: Das Gemüse ___ frisch.

    Check answer and explanation

    Das Gemüse ist frisch.

Gemüse is a singular category word in this sentence, although it may include many pieces.

  3. Say “one piece of fruit”.

    Check answer and explanation

    ein Stück Obst

Stück gives a countable unit. Obst itself is not used as an ordinary item plural.

  4. Write a note for three carrots using Karotte.

    Check answer and explanation

    drei Karotten

Karotte adds -n in the plural. Möhren would be another carrot word if you choose that vocabulary.

  5. Say “one cucumber”, then “two cucumbers”.

    Check answer and explanation

    eine Gurke – zwei Gurken

One item is singular; after zwei, use the plural Gurken.

  6. Read the weight note 500 g Erdbeeren.

    Check answer and explanation

    fünfhundert Gramm Erdbeeren

The number measures weight, and Erdbeeren identifies the food. It does not mean five hundred separate strawberries.

  7. Does eine Schale Erdbeeren guarantee an exact weight?

    Check answer and explanation

Nein. Eine Schale ist ein Behälter, keine feste Gewichtsangabe.

The container and the weight answer different questions. Read a weight label if the exact amount matters.

  8. Replace the vague category with exact items: two apples and one tomato.

    Check answer and explanation

    zwei Äpfel und eine Tomate

The first noun is plural with an umlaut; the second is singular. Specific names remove the ambiguity of a broad food category.

Make a small reference from your own kitchen

Choose six foods: three from each group. Write the singular and plural, then add a sensible quantity. Mix counts, weights and a container rather than putting the same number before every word. Hide the German side and rebuild the notes from the items you imagine.

At the next review, change the quantity but keep the item. Then change the item but keep the quantity type. This checks whether you can use the reference flexibly. A general conversation with supermarket staff is a separate skill; here the goal is accurate naming and matching each food with the amount you mean.
