Family members in German: relationships, plurals and a family map

German relationship words depend on who is speaking about whom. Tom can be a brother, father and uncle at the same time. Use the reference and fictional family map to trace each relationship before choosing its German name.

Learn the relationship word with its article and plural

Die Familie names a family. Die Verwandten means relatives. The table gives common relationship words, not a template that every real family must follow. Use the words people use for their own relationships. You can practise with the fictional family below without sharing private information.

die Schwägerindie Schwägerinnensister-in-law

The plural often needs its own learning step: Mutter – Mütter, Bruder – Brüder, Sohn – Söhne. In other pairs the ending changes without an umlaut, as in Tante – Tanten. The article die in the plural does not tell you the singular gender. Keep both complete forms in your notes.

Read one original family map from two viewpoints

In this invented family, Eva is Mira’s and Tom’s mother; Karl is their father. Mira and Tom are siblings. Mira is married to Jan, and they are Lia’s and Ben’s parents. Tom is married to Sara, and they are Emil’s parents. Lia is their niece; Emil is Lia’s and Ben’s cousin.

One family, three generations

Eva is Mira and Tom’s mother; Karl is their father. Mira and Tom are siblings. Mira is married to Jan, and they are Lia and Ben’s parents. Tom is married to Sara, and they are Emil’s parents. Lia and Ben are siblings; Emil is their cousin.

EvaKarl

Eva and Karl’s children: Mira and Tom.

  • Mira is married to Jan.

    MiraJan
    • Lia
    • Ben
  • Tom is married to Sara.

    TomSara
    • Emil

Joined names form a parent pair; the downward branch leads to that pair’s children.

Lia and Ben are siblings. Emil is their cousin.

Fictional family. Lines connect each parent pair to their children. Start with Lia to trace parents, grandparents and cousins.

Start from Lia. Go up one level to Mira and Jan, her parents. Go from Mira across to her brother Tom, then down to Emil. That path identifies Emil as Lia’s cousin, not her brother. Now start from Tom: Mira is his sister, while Lia is his niece. The people have not changed; the viewpoint has.

Use Eltern and Geschwister without miscounting

Die Eltern is a plural word for parents. For one parent, ein Elternteil is useful. Die Großeltern names grandparents; one person can be die Großmutter or der Großvater. Informal Oma and Opa correspond to grandma and grandpa.

In ordinary everyday use, die Geschwister means siblings. It can cover brothers, sisters or both; it does not mean sisters only. Ich habe zwei Geschwister counts two other people, so the speaker plus those siblings makes three children in that group. In the map Mira has one sibling, Tom. Lia also has one sibling, Ben.

For one person, beginners can say mein Bruder or meine Schwester, or use a name. Dictionaries also record a specialized or Swiss singular of Geschwister; you do not need that less common form for these tasks.

Keep cousins, nieces and relatives by marriage separate

A Cousin or Cousine is on the same generation level as the person whose relationship you are describing. A Neffe or Nichte is in the next generation in the examples here: Tom’s sister Mira is Lia’s mother, so Lia is Tom’s Nichte. Looking from Lia back toward Tom gives Onkel. Do not use the same word in both directions.

Schwager and Schwägerin cover common relationships through a spouse or a sibling’s spouse. In this map Jan is Tom’s Schwager because Jan is married to Tom’s sister Mira. Sara is Mira’s Schwägerin because Sara is married to Mira’s brother Tom. These are vocabulary examples, not definitions of legal rights or family status.

English “my friend” is also different from a family label. Mein Freund can have a friendship or romantic reading depending on context. If the exact relationship matters, give a name and a clear description rather than guessing.

Write a short description without changing the reference person

A reliable starting pattern is Das ist meine Schwester. Sie heißt Mira. To describe the map from Tom’s viewpoint, you can write Mira ist meine Schwester. Lia ist meine Nichte. Both sentences retain Tom as the speaker. If you switch to Lia, the labels must change: Mira ist meine Mutter. Tom ist mein Onkel.

The ending in mein Bruder and meine Schwester follows the noun in the phrase. The possessive-forms guide covers that grammar in detail. If you replace a name with er or sie, make the reference clear; continue with personal pronouns. For this lesson, two accurate sentences are more useful than a long description with an unclear viewpoint.

Eight relationship checks using the same map

  1. What is Eva’s relationship to Lia?

    Show answer and reason

Eva ist Lias Großmutter. Eva is Mira’s mother, and Mira is Lia’s mother: the path goes up two generations.

  2. What is Tom’s relationship to Lia?

    Show answer and reason

Tom ist Lias Onkel. Tom is the brother of Lia’s mother Mira.

  3. Complete: Lia und Ben sind …

    Show answer and reason

Geschwister. They are the daughter and son of the same parents in this fictional map.

  4. Which word describes Emil from Lia’s viewpoint: Bruder or Cousin?

    Show answer and reason

Cousin. Emil is the son of Lia’s uncle Tom, not a child of Lia’s parents.

  5. Which word describes Lia from Emil’s viewpoint?

    Show answer and reason

Cousine. Lia is the daughter of Emil’s aunt Mira. The direction changes, but both remain cousins.

  6. Does Mira have one sibling or two in this map?

    Show answer and reason

One: Tom. The speaker is not counted as their own sibling. A simple everyday answer is Ich habe einen Bruder.

  7. Why is Jan Tom’s Schwager?

    Show answer and reason

Jan is married to Tom’s sister Mira. The relationship follows through Tom’s sibling and her spouse.

  8. What is Sara’s relationship to Lia in this map?

    Show answer and reason

Sara ist Lias Tante. Sara is married to Lia’s uncle Tom. The table’s family words can describe this relationship through marriage too.

Change the speaker, then check the path

Choose Lia, Tom or Mira as the speaker. Name three people from that viewpoint, drawing a small path before each answer. Then keep the same three people and choose another speaker. Compare which labels change and which do not. The exercise practises relationships, not just word recall.

You can invent a different family, including fewer people or other relationship labels, if that is more comfortable. State every connection you need; do not infer a spouse, child or sibling from names alone. To ask for a missing connection, use a precise question such as Ist Tom Miras Bruder? or continue with the question-words guide.

Questions about this topic

Does Geschwister mean brothers and sisters?

In ordinary everyday use it means siblings: brothers, sisters or a mixture. Ich habe zwei Geschwister counts two other people, not the speaker.

How do I refer to one parent in German?

Ein Elternteil is a useful singular expression. Die Eltern is a plural word. Mother and father are die Mutter and der Vater when those labels fit the relationship.

What is the difference between Cousine and Nichte?

A Cousine is a female cousin. A Nichte is a niece, for example your sister’s daughter. In the map Lia is Emil’s Cousine but Tom’s Nichte.

Why do family words change when the speaker changes?

A label expresses a relationship between two people. Mira is Tom’s sister but Lia’s mother. First identify whose viewpoint you are using, then trace the connection.
