Home / Split the bill in German: zusammen or getrennt?

How do I ask to split the bill in German?

Getrennt, bitte asks for separate payment; it does not by itself specify equal shares. Say which items you want to pay for or ask explicitly about dividing the total. Clarify the arrangement early.

Individual items or equal shares?

Zusammen oder getrennt? asks whether you want to pay together or separately. Getrennt, bitte does not by itself mean “divide the total into equal halves.” To avoid confusion, say what you want to pay for: Ich bezahle die Suppe und das Wasser. — “I’m paying for the soup and the water.” Discuss shared items with your group and ask about separate payment early.

Two situations to practise

The following situations are invented for language practice. They do not describe a particular venue or its actual prices. Use the stated conditions for each example.

Name the items you are paying for

Zusammen oder getrennt?

Getrennt, bitte. Ich bezahle die Suppe und das Wasser.

The reply identifies specific items. It says nothing about an equal division of the full bill; discuss shared dishes with your group and ask what the venue can arrange.

Ask for two equal shares

Wir sind zu zweit. Können wir den Gesamtbetrag halbieren?

Geht das mit zwei getrennten Zahlungen?

Halbieren means divide into two equal parts. The second question checks the payment arrangement; it does not assume the restaurant can provide it.

Try a reply, then read the explanation

You hear Zusammen oder getrennt? You want to pay only for your tea and cake. Give a clear reply.

Getrennt, bitte. Ich bezahle den Tee und den Kuchen.

The reply gives both the arrangement and the items. Tee and Kuchen are masculine; after bezahlen they appear here with accusative den.

Two guests agree to divide a fictional €40 bill equally. Ask for the arrangement without assuming it is available.

Können wir den Betrag halbieren und getrennt bezahlen?

Each share would be €20 before any separately chosen extras. The sentence explicitly asks for equal halves as well as separate payment.

Three friends want one person to settle the restaurant bill in one payment. How can they answer Zusammen oder getrennt?

Zusammen, bitte.

Zusammen requests one combined payment here. How the friends reimburse one another afterwards is a separate matter.
