Home / Einweg vs Mehrweg: German bottle deposits explained

What is the difference between Einweg and Mehrweg?

Einweg describes a single-use container; Mehrweg describes one intended for cleaning and refilling. Both may involve a deposit. Read the marking and amount instead of deciding from glass or plastic alone.

What the deposit price means

Das Pfand is a deposit you pay in addition to a product’s price and can recover through the relevant return process. On a drinks shelf, zzgl. Pfand means “plus deposit.” Inkl. Pfand means “including deposit.” Read which version the price label uses before comparing the shelf price with the checkout total.

For the DPG single-use beverage system, the deposit is €0.25 per container. That is not a universal amount for every bottle, glass, crate or cup in Germany. Begin by identifying the container, rather than assuming every object with a deposit belongs in the same machine.

Identify the system before the amount

A quick container check
TypeWhat the words tell youDeposit and return cue
Einweg with the DPG markThe container is used once, then enters a material-recovery process.€0.25 per DPG container; look for the DPG marking.
MehrwegThe container is intended to be cleaned and refilled.Often €0.08 or €0.15 for beverage bottles, but amounts vary. Read the label.
A borrowed event cup or mugThe venue has its own return arrangement.Ask that vendor how much the deposit is and where to return it. Do not assume DPG rules.

The German Environment Agency’s bottle guide explains the reuse distinction and common deposit amounts. Glass alone does not mean Mehrweg, and plastic alone does not mean Einweg. Read the actual marking. “Returnable for a deposit” and “refillable” are different ideas.

For an event cup, ask before walking away: Wo gebe ich den Becher zurück? — “Where do I return the cup?” If the stall provides a token, ask what it is for. The deposit amount and return point depend on the vendor’s arrangement, so clarify both before you leave.

Two situations to practise

The following situations are invented for language practice. They do not describe a particular venue or its actual prices. Use the stated conditions for each example.

Ask about a marked reusable bottle

Auf dem Etikett steht Mehrweg.

Wie hoch ist das Pfand für diese Flasche?

The marking identifies intended reuse. The question asks for the actual deposit; it does not assume that every reusable bottle has the same amount.

Read a price plus a DPG deposit

Auf dem erfundenen Preisschild steht: 1,10 Euro zzgl. 0,25 Euro Pfand.

Für diese Dose beträgt der Gesamtpreis beim Kauf 1,35 Euro.

This invented price adds €0.25 to €1.10. It is a DPG-container example, not a current shop offer or a universal deposit for every bottle and cup.

Try a reply, then read the explanation

You see a plastic bottle but have not read its marking. Can the material alone tell you that it is Einweg?

Ich prüfe zuerst die Kennzeichnung. Ist das eine Mehrwegflasche?

No. Reusable bottles can also be plastic. Check the actual marking and deposit rather than treating material as a complete classification.

A practice task gives two accepted DPG containers with a €0.25 deposit each. What refund does that make?

Zwei mal fünfundzwanzig Cent sind fünfzig Cent.

Two times €0.25 is €0.50. The given DPG classification matters; do not transfer this calculation automatically to reusable bottles or event cups.

A stall lends you a cup with its own deposit arrangement. What useful question can you ask before leaving?

Wo gebe ich den Becher zurück?

Ask that vendor about its return point and amount. A vendor cup is not automatically a DPG supermarket container.
