Home / German Christmas dinner: dish names and questions

How do I talk about Christmas dinner in German?

German Christmas dinner varies by family and occasion. Learn dish names such as Kartoffelsalat mit Würstchen, Gänsebraten and Kartoffelklöße, then ask what your hosts serve and whether you should bring something.

What do people eat for Christmas dinner?

The German National Tourist Board’s Christmas Eve guide gives potato salad with sausages as a Christmas Eve example, and roast goose with dumplings and red cabbage, or carp, for the following festive days. These examples show variety; they do not establish what every German family eats.

Read the dish name, then ask about the preparation
Menu wordingPlain-English meaningQuestion you can ask
Kartoffelsalat mit WürstchenPotato salad with sausagesWie wird der Kartoffelsalat gemacht? — How is the potato salad prepared?
Gänsebraten mit RotkohlRoast goose with red cabbageWelche Beilagen gibt es dazu? — What sides come with it?
KartoffelklößePotato dumplingsSind die Klöße hausgemacht? — Are the dumplings homemade?

If you are visiting friends, tell them about dietary requirements before the meal. Ask what you can bring without assuming a sweet dish, meat dish or alcoholic drink is wanted. Soll ich etwas zum Essen mitbringen? means “Should I bring something to eat?”

Check the situation

A source lists goose, carp and potato salad as examples. Must every German family serve all of them?

Show answer

No. The examples show different choices and occasions; they are not a required menu.

A menu says Gänsebraten mit Rotkohl. What is Rotkohl?

Show answer

Red cabbage. Mit identifies an accompaniment here. Ask Welche Beilagen gibt es dazu? to clarify the complete set of sides.
