Countries and nationalities in German: how do you say where you’re from?

Use a complete origin phrase: aus Deutschland, aus Vietnam, aus der Schweiz or aus den Niederlanden. Country names, nationality adjectives, person nouns and language names have different forms and capitalization.

Where someone comes from, their nationality and their languages are related questions, but they are not the same question. The table keeps them separate so that you can make an accurate introduction.

The person forms below are example noun phrases, not a demand to label yourself by nationality. Use your own truthful details and ask another person’s preference.

Country, origin phrase, person and language

The language column gives examples associated with the country, not an exhaustive list or a claim about every resident. A person’s citizenship, birthplace and home language can differ. Ask for the information you actually need.

Use the origin phrase, not a guessed article

Most country names in this table normally stand without an article: Ich komme aus Vietnam. Some have an article: aus der Schweiz, aus der Türkei. The plural names take dative plural after aus: aus den USA, aus den Niederlanden.

A nationality adjective is normally lower-case: eine deutsche Stadt. A person noun has a capital: eine Deutsche, ein Deutscher. The noun Deutscher behaves like an adjective in its endings; do not turn the nominative examples into a rule for every case. Language nouns are capitalized: Ich lerne Deutsch.

Ask about origin and language separately

A
Woher kommst du?
B
Ich komme aus der Schweiz und wohne jetzt in Berlin.
A
Welche Sprachen sprichst du?
B
Ich spreche Deutsch und Französisch. Und du?
A
Vietnamesisch und Englisch. Deutsch lerne ich gerade.

Create a true answer in three parts

State your origin if you want to, then where you live now and which language you are learning. These are separate facts: Ich komme aus Vietnam. Ich wohne in Wien. Ich lerne Deutsch. Do not infer an individual’s language from a country label.

For the destination Switzerland, the ordinary phrase is in die Schweiz; for Germany it is nach Deutschland. This reference concentrates on origin. Use the existing direction/preposition lesson for a full destination decision rather than memorising a country name without its phrase.

Put it into practice

Try each task before opening the answer. Open questions show one possible model answer.

  1. Complete: Ich komme __ Schweiz.

    Answer and explanation

    aus der

Aus takes dative; Schweiz normally has the feminine article.

  2. Complete: Sie kommt aus __ Niederlanden.

    Answer and explanation

    den

The country name is plural and takes dative after aus.

  3. Choose capitalization: Ich lerne deutsch/Deutsch.

    Answer and explanation

    Deutsch

The language is a noun here.

  4. Choose capitalization: eine deutsche/Deutsche Stadt.

    Answer and explanation

    eine deutsche Stadt

Deutsche modifies Stadt as an adjective.

  5. Say that you come from Vietnam and live in Vienna.

    Answer and explanation

Ich komme aus Vietnam und wohne in Wien.

Both names occur without an article in these phrases.

  6. Ask which languages someone speaks using du.

    Answer and explanation

    Welche Sprachen sprichst du?

Sprichst is the du form of sprechen.

Questions learners ask

Does every country name need an article?

No. Learn the complete phrase. Deutschland usually has none; die Schweiz has one. Modifiers and special contexts can change the construction.

Is nationality the same as language?

No. Ask the two questions separately and avoid assumptions about an individual’s language.
